Want Peekaboo Highlights on Red Hair? Check This Easy Guide!

Okay, so I’ve been wanting to try out some peekaboo highlights for a while, and red just seemed like the perfect, bold choice. I finally took the plunge, and let me tell you, it was a journey! Here’s how it went down:

Gathering My Supplies

First things first, I needed to get my hands on everything. I didn’t want to be halfway through and realize I was missing something crucial. Here’s my list:

  • Red hair dye (I went with a semi-permanent one, just in case I hated it)
  • Bleach kit (Since my hair is naturally dark, I needed to lighten the sections I wanted to dye)
  • Developer (Came with the bleach kit, but it’s important!)
  • Gloves (Seriously, don’t skip these!)
  • Applicator brush
  • Mixing bowl (Non-metallic, of course)
  • Foil (Lots and lots of foil)
  • Clips (To section my hair)
  • Old towel (To protect my clothes)
  • Vaseline (To protect my skin around my hairline)

The Bleaching Process

This was the scariest part, honestly. I’ve never bleached my hair before, so I was super nervous. I started by sectioning off the underneath layer of my hair – the part that would be the “peekaboo” part. Then, I applied Vaseline to my skin around the area to avoid any accidental staining.

I mixed the bleach and developer according to the instructions on the box (very important to follow those!). Then, wearing my gloves, I carefully applied the bleach to the sectioned hair, making sure to saturate it completely. I wrapped each bleached section in foil to keep it separated from the rest of my hair.

Then came the waiting game. I checked the color every 10 minutes or so, and after about 30 minutes, it was light enough. I rinsed out the bleach thoroughly and washed my hair with a clarifying shampoo.

Dyeing Time!

Once my hair was dry, I put some gloves back and started. I used the applicator brush to apply the red dye to the bleached sections, making sure to coat every single strand.

More waiting! I let the dye sit for the time recommended on the box, and then I rinsed it out until the water ran clear. I used a color-safe shampoo and conditioner, because gotta protect that vibrant red!

The Final Result

I was so excited! The red peekaboo highlights looked amazing! It was such a fun pop of color, and it wasn’t too overwhelming. It’s bold, but still kind of subtle since it’s hidden underneath. I’m totally obsessed, and I’m already thinking about what color I want to try next!

It was definetly much work for doing it, but I like DIY things, I will try it again if I got more time.
