Okay, so I was digging through some old boxes the other day, you know, the ones you keep meaning to sort out but never do? And bam, I found them. A pair of chunky platform sandals straight out of, like, 2001 or 2002. Remember those? The ones with the really thick soles, kinda like walking on stylish bricks.

Seeing them brought back a flood of memories. Mostly of questionable fashion choices, but hey, it was a time! I looked at these things, probably haven’t seen the light of day in nearly two decades. They were surprisingly okay, condition-wise. A bit dusty, but the foam sole hadn’t crumbled into oblivion, which honestly surprised me.
Getting Them Ready
First thing, I had to give them a good clean. Wiped off the dust, cleaned the straps. They’re black, faux leather maybe, with these wide straps across the foot. The platform itself is massive, probably a good couple of inches. Holding them, I thought, “Did we really walk in these things all day?” The answer, apparently, was yes.
So, I figured, why not? Let’s take these relics for a spin. For old times’ sake, you know? Just around the house at first, obviously. Wasn’t sure if my ankles could still handle the precarious height after years of sensible shoes.
The Actual Experience
Putting them on felt… weird. Instantly taller, which was novel again. But also instantly less stable. Walking felt very deliberate. You have to kind of stomp-stomp-stomp your way around. No graceful gliding possible here.
- The weight: They weren’t super heavy, but you definitely knew you had shoes on. Solid things.
- The clomp factor: Oh yeah, they make noise. A distinct ‘clomp clomp’ on hard floors. Stealth is not an option.
- The balance: It wasn’t terrible on a flat surface, but I wouldn’t fancy tackling stairs or uneven pavement without serious concentration. Felt like my ankles were working overtime just to keep me upright.
I wore them around the house for maybe an hour. Cooked dinner in them, which was an adventure in itself, especially reaching for things on higher shelves (the height boost was useful there, gotta admit!). But by the end of it, my feet felt kinda tired. Not sore, just… aware. Aware of the elevation and the slightly unnatural way I had to walk.

Honestly, it was fun for a bit of nostalgia. It made me chuckle thinking back to when these were peak fashion. Would I wear them out now? Probably not for a long walk. Maybe for a very specific, very short, themed event? Possibly. They’re definitely a statement.
So yeah, that was my little trip down memory lane, courtesy of some ancient platform sandals. They’re back in the box now, but it was kinda cool to revisit that Y2K vibe, even if just for an hour in my kitchen. Made me appreciate my comfy sneakers a whole lot more, that’s for sure.
