Alright, let me tell you about this thing I worked on, which I ended up calling “Joanna Last” in my own head. It wasn’t its official name or anything, but for me, that’s what it became. It felt like the final, ultimate, please-let-this-be-it version of a long, drawn-out saga.

The Beginning of Joanna

It all started pretty innocently. We had this idea, this need, and I was tasked to put something together. I thought, “Okay, this should be fairly straightforward.” I even sketched it out, had a clear plan. That initial version, let’s call it Joanna 1.0, was born. It did the basic job, you know? Simple, functional. I was quite pleased for about a week.

Then the feedback started rolling in. “This is great, but can it also…” or “What if we added a feature for…” and my personal favorite, “It needs to be more… you know… dynamic.” Suddenly, my straightforward Joanna 1.0 wasn’t enough. Not even close.

The Endless Revisions

So, I dove back in. Reworked things. Added new bits. Out came Joanna 2.0. Then 2.5. Then 3.0. It felt like I was constantly chasing a moving target. Every time I thought I’d nailed it, someone, somewhere, would have a new idea, a new requirement, or they’d suddenly remember a “critical” feature we’d apparently discussed months ago (which, of course, I had no recollection of).

It was frustrating, to say the least. I’d spend weeks building something, only to have to tear parts of it down again. It felt like I was building a sandcastle while the tide was coming in. My little project “Joanna” was becoming this sprawling beast, and frankly, a bit of a Frankenstein’s monster.

Here’s a taste of the conflicting demands I was juggling:

  • One department wanted it super simple, almost no options.
  • Another wanted every conceivable option and customization under the sun.
  • And then there was the “make it look pretty” crowd, who didn’t care much about functionality as long as it had nice colors.

The “Last” Straw – Birthing Joanna Last

I got to a point where I was genuinely fed up. I’d poured so much time and energy into this thing, and it still felt like a mess. I remember thinking, “Okay, one more go. This is the absolute final attempt. I’m going to make it work, make it stable, and focus on the core purpose. If this doesn’t cut it, then I don’t know what will.”

And that’s how “Joanna Last” came to be. I wasn’t aiming for perfection or trying to please everyone anymore. My goal was to create something solid, reliable, and maintainable that actually solved the original problem. I had to be firm. I cut out a lot of the fluff, the “nice-to-haves” that were causing instability or were just feature creep. There were some difficult conversations, lots of “But we really wanted…” and I had to just stick to my guns.

The process was intense. I went back to basics. I re-evaluated every single component. I tested it more thoroughly than any version before. It wasn’t about speed of development this time; it was about getting it right. Properly right.

The Aftermath

And you know what? “Joanna Last” finally did the trick. It wasn’t the all-singing, all-dancing marvel some had envisioned, but it worked. It was robust. It did what it was supposed to do, and it did it well. The number of complaints and “Can you just fix this?” requests dropped significantly.

Looking back, “Joanna Last” was a huge learning experience for me. It taught me a lot about managing expectations, the importance of defining scope, and sometimes, the courage to say “no.” It also marked a sort of turning point for me personally. After seeing “Joanna Last” through, I felt a sense of closure with that whole phase. It really was the “last” one for me in many ways, as not long after, I decided to move on to different challenges. So yeah, the name stuck, at least in my memory.
