What is Streetwear? A Beginners Guide to Urban Style

Alright, so you wanna know about streetwear, huh? Okay, buckle up, ’cause this ain’t gonna be no textbook definition. This is how I, myself, got into it and what I think it’s all about.

It all started when I was like, 15? Maybe even younger. I was super into skating. Not like, Tony Hawk pro-skater level, but I could ollie and cruise around, you know? Anyway, all the older dudes at the skatepark, they weren’t wearing just any old t-shirt and jeans. They had on these graphic tees, hoodies with crazy designs, and these… well, let’s just say they were baggier than anything I’d ever seen before.

That was my first taste of streetwear. I didn’t know what to call it then, but I knew I wanted in.

So, I started digging. I wasn’t buying anything yet, my mom wasn’t exactly down with spending a ton of cash on clothes. But I was looking. I’d spend hours on the internet, back when dial-up was still a thing, trying to figure out where these guys were getting their stuff. I stumbled across blogs, forums, and even some early online stores. It was all a jumbled mess of brands I’d never heard of: Supreme, Stussy, BAPE… sounded like gibberish at the time.

Then came the day I actually bought something. Saved up my allowance and lawn-mowing money for weeks. It was just a simple Stussy t-shirt, black with the iconic logo. But man, I wore that thing everywhere. I felt like I was part of something, like I was in the know.

The thing is, streetwear is more than just clothes. It’s about attitude, it’s about community, it’s about expressing yourself. I started paying attention to the details. The way people wore their clothes, the sneakers they rocked, even the way they walked. It was all part of the vibe.

I started experimenting myself. Mixing high and low, pairing vintage finds with newer pieces. It wasn’t about following trends, it was about creating my own style. And yeah, I made some mistakes along the way. Some outfits were downright atrocious. But that’s part of the learning process, right?

Over the years, my understanding of streetwear has evolved. It’s not just about skating anymore. It’s influenced by hip-hop, punk rock, art, design… everything. It’s a constantly changing landscape, and that’s what makes it so exciting.

Now, I’m not saying I’m some streetwear guru or anything. But I’ve been around the block a few times. And if you ask me what streetwear is, I’d say it’s this:

  • It’s about authenticity. Be yourself, don’t just copy what everyone else is doing.
  • It’s about comfort. Yeah, style is important, but you gotta be comfortable in what you’re wearing.
  • It’s about creativity. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try new things.
  • It’s about community. Connect with other people who are into the same stuff.

And most importantly, it’s about having fun. It’s just clothes, after all. Don’t take it too seriously.

So, there you have it. My super unofficial, totally biased, but hopefully somewhat helpful explanation of what streetwear is. Go out there, find your own style, and rock it.
