Okay, so I got curious the other day about which beauty brands are really hitting it big in China right now. It wasn’t for any big project, just personal interest, you know? Seeing what people are actually buying and talking about.

My first step was pretty simple. I just started asking around. Talked to a few friends, some colleagues who are really into skincare and makeup. Got a bunch of names thrown at me. Some were the usual suspects, big global names you hear everywhere. Others were brands I hadn’t heard as much about, apparently local Chinese brands that have popped up.
That was interesting, but obviously not very scientific. Everyone has their favorites, right? So, I figured I needed to dig a bit deeper. I went online, opened up my browser, and just started searching. Things like “most popular beauty brands China,” “top selling cosmetics China,” “best skincare brands China 2023,” that kind of stuff.
Man, there was a lot out there. Tons of articles, blog posts, and some market reports locked behind paywalls. I skipped the paid stuff and just tried to piece things together from the free info. It was a bit messy, different lists sometimes had different brands, but some names definitely started showing up over and over again.
Looking for Patterns
I tried to look specifically at mentions on big shopping platforms, you know, the kind of sites where millions of people buy stuff. Like checking out bestseller lists or seeing which brands had huge online stores and lots of reviews. That felt a bit more real-world than just random articles. I spent a good hour or two just clicking around, comparing names I saw.
It became pretty clear there are a few types of brands doing well:

- The International Giants: No surprise here. Brands like L’Oréal, Estée Lauder, Lancôme, SK-II – they have a huge presence and lots of loyal customers. They’ve been in the market for ages.
- The Rising C-Beauty Stars: This was the really interesting part for me. Local Chinese brands, often called C-beauty brands, are seriously popular. Names like Florasis (Huaxizi) and Perfect Diary kept appearing everywhere. Their marketing seems super smart, very focused on online trends and influencers.
- Other Strong Players: Then there were others, maybe not quite as globally massive as the first group but still very strong in China, like Shiseido (Japanese, but huge in China) and some other established international and local names.
What I Found Out
So after all that digging and asking around, I got a clearer picture. It’s not just one or two brands dominating everything. It’s a mix. You’ve got the established global luxury and mass-market players that everyone knows.
But, the big takeaway for me was how strong the local Chinese brands have become. Florasis, with its super intricate packaging inspired by Chinese culture, and Perfect Diary, known for its fast fashion approach to makeup and collaborations, are definitely major players now. They seem to understand the local market and digital marketing really well.
It’s not like I produced some official market report, obviously. This was just me, clicking around, reading stuff, and talking to people. But it gave me a good sense of the landscape. The Chinese beauty market seems super dynamic with both global giants and innovative local brands fighting for attention. Pretty fascinating stuff to see how it evolves.
