Okay, so, Marfa, Texas. Where do I even start? This place has been on my bucket list for ages. I finally decided, “Screw it, let’s do this!” I booked a flight, packed my bags, and off I went.
First off, getting there was a bit of a trek. It’s not exactly next to a major airport. I flew into El Paso and then rented a car for the three-hour drive. The drive itself was an experience. Wide-open spaces, desert landscapes, and the occasional tumbleweed rolling by. It really sets the mood for what’s to come.
Once I rolled into Marfa, I checked into my hotel. I found a pretty nice hotel and that was not expensive. After settling in, I started to wander around. This town is tiny, but it’s packed with character. You’ve got these old, historic buildings mixed in with modern art installations. It’s a unique vibe, for sure.
Of course, I had to hit up the famous art spots. The Chinati Foundation was a must-see. It’s this massive collection of contemporary art, mostly large-scale installations. I spent hours there, just walking around and soaking it all in. The minimalist art by Donald Judd was something else. It’s all about the space and how the art interacts with it. You really feel immersed in the work.
- Then there’s the Prada Marfa.
It’s not a real Prada store, obviously. It’s an art installation that looks like a Prada store, just sitting out in the middle of nowhere. It’s so bizarre and out of place, but that’s what makes it so cool. I snapped a bunch of photos there, naturally.
The food scene in Marfa surprised me. I thought it would be all Tex-Mex, but there’s a good variety. I had some delicious meals at local restaurants. I heard that some people complained the real estate price is rocketing and living is hard, but fortunately, I was just a tourist and did not feel that pressure.
One evening, I drove out of town to try and catch the Marfa Lights. They’re these mysterious lights that appear in the sky, and nobody really knows what causes them. I didn’t see them, unfortunately, but the stargazing was incredible. The sky is so clear out there, you can see a million stars.
All in all, Marfa was a fantastic trip. It’s not your typical vacation spot. It’s a bit quirky, a bit artsy, and a whole lot of memorable. I felt like I stepped into a different world for a few days. I definitely want to go back sometime and explore even more.
If you’re into art, or just looking for a unique getaway, I highly recommend checking out Marfa. It’s a special place. I also highly recommend driving to get there, which can give you a special feeling. Be sure to book your hotel in advance as there are not many choices.
