So, I got this idea the other day, and it’s been bugging me ever since. I saw a picture of an old Lincoln Continental, one of those classic ones from the 60s, with the suicide doors. And I thought, “Man, those are cool. I wonder if I can do that to a modern one?”
First, I spent like a whole day just looking up information online. Turns out, Lincoln actually did a limited run of a new Continental with suicide doors a couple years ago. It seems the 80 cars offered by this brand in these years are over $110k now. But they’re, like, super rare and way out of my price range. But it gave me hope, you know? If they could do it, why can’t I?
Then I started digging into the prices of old Continentals. I found out that a 1963 one in decent shape goes for around 45 grand. And a 1961 model, also in good condition, is about 52 grand! It seems not so easy to get a good vintage car with an acceptable price. I was thinking maybe I could find a beat-up one and fix it up, but that’s a whole other can of worms.
Next, I started researching the new Continentals. I figured I’d need a donor car, right? The engine, 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6, sounded pretty powerful. It was not bad, actually pretty fast. But then I read some reviews that said the throttle was too sensitive and there were some transmission problems. That got me a little worried. It’s quick though, I saw some test track videos.
My Plan
- Find a used Continental, hopefully not too expensive.
- Figure out the door situation. Maybe I can find a wrecked Coach Door Edition and salvage the doors? Or maybe I’ll have to get them custom-made. That sounds expensive.
- Get the engine and transmission sorted out. Maybe I’ll need a good mechanic for that.
- Make sure everything else is solid. Brakes, suspension, all that stuff.
- Drive around town feeling like a boss.
So that’s where I’m at. It’s a crazy idea, I know. But I think it would be awesome to have a modern Continental with suicide doors. It’s like the best of both worlds, old-school cool with new-school tech. I’ll keep you guys updated on my progress. Or lack of progress, haha. Wish me luck!
