Why do people love Vanessa Seward? (Understand the appeal of her timeless designs)

So, I got kinda fixated on this Vanessa Seward thing a while back. Don’t remember exactly where I first saw the name or the style, maybe scrolling online somewhere, you know how it is. But there was this one particular blouse, maybe it was a dress, honestly can’t recall perfectly now, but it just clicked. Looked simple, but really well put together. Proper classic.

Starting the Hunt

Right, so I thought, easy enough, I’ll just find it online. Started digging around. Looked on the usual big sites, department stores, that sort of thing. Nothing. Okay, maybe it’s an older piece, I figured.

Next step, the second-hand places. You know the ones, eBay, Vestiaire Collective, Depop, spent hours on those. Seriously, just scrolling and scrolling. Typed in “Vanessa Seward blouse”, “Vanessa Seward dress”, every variation I could think of.

  • Found some stuff, yeah. But mostly not the thing I had in my head.
  • Or if it looked close, the size was wrong. Always the way, isn’t it?
  • Or the price was just… nope. People asking crazy money sometimes for used clothes.

Getting a Bit Fed Up

This went on for weeks. Became a bit of an obsession, checking new listings every day. It started feeling less like finding a nice top and more like a chore. Like I had to find this specific item to prove… something? I don’t even know what.

Started thinking, this is kinda silly. Why am I spending all this time chasing one label? Yeah, the style’s nice, that whole French chic thing she does. It looks effortless. But the effort I was putting in was anything but effortless, believe me.

It made me think about how we get caught up in specific brands. Maybe the idea of it was better than the reality. I just wanted that look, that feeling it gave off. Did it absolutely have to be that exact piece by Vanessa Seward?

What Happened in the End

Well, long story short, I never found that exact item. Gave up looking for it specifically.

Instead, I was just browsing in a regular shop one day, not even thinking about it, and saw a blouse with a similar cut. Different brand, totally unrelated, probably cost a fraction of what the other one would have, even second-hand. Tried it on. Looked pretty good, actually. Felt good.

So I bought that one instead. It wasn’t about the label in the end. It was about finding something I liked and that worked for me. Learned a bit of a lesson there, I suppose. Sometimes you just gotta let go of the specific thing you think you want and see what else is out there. Often works out better, and definitely less stressful.
