Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this “car security” thing, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey. I started with basically zero knowledge, just a vague idea of wanting to make my old beater a little harder to steal.

First, I hit up some forums and, you know, just lurked. I read through tons of posts about different alarm systems, GPS trackers, and all that jazz. It was overwhelming at first, all these different brands and opinions.
I decided to start simple. I picked up a basic steering wheel lock – one of those bright yellow club things. It’s not foolproof, but it’s a visible deterrent, right? Figured it was a good first step.
- Installed the steering wheel lock. Super easy, just clamp it on.
- Felt slightly more secure, but still wanted more.
Next, I started looking into alarms. There are so many options! I watched a bunch of YouTube videos of people installing them, and honestly, it looked like a pain. Wiring diagrams, splicing wires… not my forte.
DIY or Professional Install?
I wrestled with this for a while. Do I try to install it myself and risk messing up my car’s electrical system? Or do I pay a professional, which could cost a pretty penny?
I got lazy at this step, and I still looking for a professional.

But my car is old, and I don’t want to pay a lot.
So, that’s where I’m at. Steering wheel lock in place, alarm system still in the “research” phase. It’s a work in progress, but hey, at least I’m doing something to protect my ride. And maybe, just maybe, I have already made my old car safe.
