Alright everyone, gather ’round! Today I’m gonna walk you through a little project I tackled recently: putting together a women’s 1970s outfit. It wasn’t rocket science, but it took a bit of digging and some trial and error, you know?

So, Where Did I Even Start?
First things first, I had this image in my head. You know, the 70s – it’s all about a certain vibe. I wasn’t going for a costume, more like something wearable that screamed “seventies cool.” So, I actually just sat down and thought about what those key pieces were. My brain immediately went to bell-bottoms. You can’t do 70s without ’em, right? And then, like, those patterned shirts, maybe something with a bit of a collar. Platform shoes, of course, but I decided to focus on the clothes first.
The Great Hunt for Clothes
Okay, so armed with my mental checklist, I started the hunt. My first port of call? Thrift stores! I love a good rummage. I spent a good afternoon just sifting through racks. It’s funny, you find all sorts, but finding the right thing takes patience. I was looking for specific fabrics too – maybe some corduroy, or that slinky polyester stuff they loved back then.
I actually struck gold pretty quick with a pair of high-waisted, flared trousers. Not exactly bell-bottoms in the extreme sense, but definitely a wide flare. They were a dark brown corduroy. Score! Finding a top was a bit trickier. I wanted something with a bit of pattern, maybe earthy tones. I looked through so many blouses. Some were too 80s, some just plain weird. Eventually, I found this knit top, kind of a geometric pattern in oranges and browns. It had that slightly fitted but comfy look.
- Scoured three different thrift shops.
- Really focused on the cut of the trousers.
- Kept an eye out for authentic-looking patterns for the top.
Putting It All Together – The Try-On Sesh
So, I got my main pieces home. Now for the moment of truth: trying it all on. This is where you see if your vision actually works, or if you look like you got dressed in the dark. I put on the corduroy flares and the knit top. You know what? Not bad! The silhouette was definitely there. The high waist of the trousers worked well with the length of the top. I did a little spin in front of the mirror. Felt pretty groovy, not gonna lie.
I then played around with how to wear the top – tucked in, left out. Tucked in definitely gave it more of that defined 70s shape. I also thought about a belt. A wide leather belt would have been perfect, but I didn’t have one immediately to hand that fit the bill. Made a mental note on that.

Accessorizing – The Finishing Touches
No 70s outfit is complete without some accessories, right? This is where you can really lean into the theme. I dug through my jewelry box. I was looking for something chunky, maybe some wooden beads or a long pendant necklace. I found a long chain with a sort of amber-colored stone. Perfect!
Then I thought about eyewear. Big sunglasses! I have a pair of oversized, slightly rounded sunglasses that have that retro feel. Popped those on. Instant vibe upgrade! If I was going full out, I might have considered a headscarf, tied in that chic 70s way, but I kept it a bit simpler for this run.
And Voilà – The Final Look!
So, after all that, there it was. My 1970s-inspired outfit. The corduroy flares, the patterned knit top, the long necklace, and the big shades. I even paired it with some simple ankle boots I had that had a bit of a block heel – not full platforms, but they worked.
Honestly, I was pretty chuffed with how it turned out. It was comfortable, it felt authentic without being a caricature, and it was all sourced pretty easily. It just took a bit of vision and some dedicated searching. Definitely gonna rock this look out and about. It’s amazing what you can pull together when you put your mind to it!
