Alright, buckle up buttercups, because I’m about to spill the tea on my latest creative adventure: the Alexander McQueen butterfly!

First things first: inspiration struck. I was scrolling through Pinterest, as one does, and BAM! McQueen’s iconic butterfly designs hit me like a ton of bricks. I knew I had to try and create something inspired by that dark, romantic, edgy vibe.
Next up: gathering supplies. I raided my craft stash (which is honestly more like a small craft store at this point). Here’s what I ended up using:
- Black cardstock – gotta have that McQueen darkness.
- Various colors of metallic and iridescent paper scraps – for the butterfly wings, duh!
- Craft glue – the stickier, the better.
- Scissors and a craft knife – for precision cutting.
- Rhinestones and glitter – because a little sparkle never hurt nobody.
- A frame – to showcase the final masterpiece.
Then came the fun part: designing. I didn’t want to just copy McQueen’s designs, so I started sketching out my own butterfly shapes. I played around with different wing patterns, trying to capture that delicate yet slightly menacing feel. I wanted something that looked both fragile and powerful, ya know?
The cutting process was a slog. Let me tell you. All those intricate little details? My hands were cramping like crazy! I started with the black cardstock base, cutting out the main butterfly shape. Then, I used the metallic and iridescent paper scraps to create the wing details, layering them to add depth and dimension. The craft knife came in clutch for the super tiny, fiddly bits.
Gluing everything together was a test of patience. Seriously. Craft glue is NOT your friend when you’re working with delicate paper. I ended up using tiny dabs of glue and holding each piece in place until it stuck. It took hours, but eventually, the butterfly started to take shape.

Sparkle time! Once the glue was dry, I went wild with the rhinestones and glitter. I added rhinestones to the butterfly’s body and along the edges of the wings for some extra bling. And of course, a generous sprinkle of glitter to catch the light. Because why not?
Finally: framing. I popped the finished butterfly into a simple black frame to really make it stand out. And there you have it – my very own Alexander McQueen-inspired butterfly artwork!
The verdict? It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. I’m super happy with how it turned out. It’s a little bit dark, a little bit sparkly, and definitely has that McQueen edge. Plus, it looks amazing on my wall. Maybe next time I’ll try making a whole swarm!
So yeah, that was my butterfly journey. What do you guys think? Any other designer-inspired projects I should try?
