Walking through, it was like a journey through time, but with more silk and sequins. I saw gowns that, I swear, looked like they belonged to royalty. He dressed some really important women, you know, like the kind you read about in history books or see on TV. And it wasn’t just the dresses themselves, but the stories behind them. They even had stuff from when he designed for Balmain, which I didn’t know. Apparently, he was the first Latin designer to design for a French house. Pretty big deal.
What really got me was the craftsmanship. I’d get up close to some of these gowns – not too close, of course! – and the detail was just insane. It made him seem more down-to-earth, in a weird way. It showed he could do more than just red carpet stuff.
The whole exhibition was done with his family and the de la Renta company, so it felt really personal, like a proper tribute. It wasn’t just a bunch of clothes on mannequins; it was a celebration of his whole career, his whole life, really.
By the time I left, my feet were aching, but my head was full. It’s funny, I went in thinking “fashion show stuff,” but I came out with a real appreciation for the guy and his work. It’s more than just fabric and thread; it’s about making people feel amazing, leaving a legacy. Definitely an experience I won’t forget anytime soon. Made me want to dress up, even if it’s just to go to the grocery store!
