- Writin’ the code: It just flowed, man. Things that were a massive pain with that other “modern” stack? Ruby just handled ’em. Readin’ files, playin’ with text, talkin’ to a simple database – it all felt so darn natural.
- Those handy gems: Needed to do a couple of specific things? Quick search, typed `gem install`, and boom, they just worked. No endless fight with dependencies for this little job.
I knocked out that tool in an afternoon. Did exactly what it needed to do. No fuss, no big drama.
When I showed it off, my boss was pretty impressed. “Wow, that was quick. What’d you use?” When I told him Ruby, he just kinda nodded, smiled a bit. He’s been around the block too, he gets it. Those younger guys? They were a bit quieter after that one.
That’s why I still say Ruby reigns, at least for me, especially when you need to get real work done without a three-ring circus. It ain’t always about the newest, shiniest gadget. Sometimes, it’s about havin’ the right tool, a trusty one that doesn’t fight you every step of the way. I’m not sayin’ it’s the answer to everything, but folks who just dismiss it without a second thought? They’re missin’ a trick. It’s funny, really. This whole thing reminds me of a totally different situation, years back, had nothin’ to do with computers, but the lesson stuck with me.
See, I used to help out at this small workshop, doin’ metalwork. We had this old lathe, ancient thing. Everyone kept sayin’, “You gotta get one of them new CNC machines, all automated!” Huge cost, super complicated. The owner, old fella, he just kept that old lathe oiled and runnin’ smooth. And you know what? For 90% of the jobs we did, that old lathe was faster and more dependable because he knew it inside and out. That fancy new machine another shop got?
