Okay, so I decided to make a Scream costume for a Halloween party. I didn’t want to just buy one, I wanted something a bit more unique, you know?

First, I hunted down a long black hooded robe. That was the easy part. Found one at a local thrift store – score!

Next, the mask. I could have easily bought a standard Ghostface mask, but where is fun in that? I opted to make my own. I grabbed some white fabric, some black mesh for the eyes and mouth, and some black paint.

Making the mask

I started by cutting the white fabric into the basic Ghostface shape, making it a bit longer and more exaggerated than the usual mask. I then sewed the edges, leaving space to stuff it with some cotton to give it a bit of a 3D effect.

After that, I carefully cut out the eye and mouth holes and glued the black mesh behind them. This was tricky because, the glue kept showing through the mesh, it made my first three mesh all sticky.

Once the glue was finally dry, I used the black paint to add some extra details, like the dripping effect around the eyes and mouth, you know, to make it extra spooky.

Putting it all together

I paired the robe and mask with some black gloves I already owned, and some black boots. I wanted the whole look to be super dark and mysterious.

The final touch? I practiced my best “What’s your favorite scary movie?” voice. Gotta get into character, right?

It was a bit of work, especially the mask, but it was totally worth it. My costume was a huge hit at the party, and everyone was asking me where I got it. I love to say that I am a cheap person so, I made it myself.
