Okay, so the other day, I decided to dive into the world of reposado tequila. I’ve always been more of a blanco or silver tequila kind of guy, but I figured it was time to branch out. Let me tell you, it was quite the experience!

First off, I went to the liquor store and picked up a bottle of reposado. I did some research online before and learned that this stuff is aged in oak barrels for anywhere between two months to a year. That sounded interesting, so I grabbed one that said it was aged for six months.

When I got home, I decided to try it neat first. The color was this beautiful golden hue, totally different from the clear blanco I’m used to. I poured a little into a glass, swirled it around, and took a sniff. It smelled like tequila, for sure, but there was this other thing going on—kind of like vanilla and maybe a bit of caramel. Must be from the oak barrels, I thought.

Now, the taste was something else. It was way smoother than any blanco I’d ever had. Still had that agave kick, but it was rounded out, mellowed. I could definitely taste the wood, and there were these subtle hints of, like, spices and sweetness. I decided to follow what I read online to sip it slowly instead of throwing it back like a shot. That was a good call because it really let me appreciate all the different flavors going on.

    Experimenting with Cocktails

  • I mixed up an Old Fashioned, just subbing the whiskey for the reposado. Man, that was a winner. The tequila’s oakiness really complemented the bitters and sugar.
  • Then I tried it with some pineapple juice, because someone told me that those two go well together. They weren’t kidding! The sweetness of the pineapple and the smoothness of the reposado were a match made in heaven.
  • Last, I mixed it with some ginger beer to see what it tastes like. It was good, but not as good as the first two I tried. I guess I prefer the sweet taste.

All in all, this reposado experiment was a blast. I never thought I’d enjoy a tequila that wasn’t blanco, but this stuff changed my mind. It’s like the tequila grew up and got all sophisticated. It is just a fun practice for me. If you’re a tequila drinker and haven’t tried a good reposado, you’re totally missing out!

Oh, and before I forget, there was this one cocktail recipe I saw called “True Romance.” I didn’t get around to trying it, but it sounded intriguing. Something about it being made by French monks for centuries. That’s next on my list!
