Okay, so Halloween is coming, and I’ve always been that person who scrambles for a costume at the last minute. This year, I decided to do something different, something, well, red. I wanted to make it all about one bold color – a red Halloween costume.

Brainstorming and Gathering
First, I brainstormed some ideas. What could I be that was entirely red? A devil? Too cliché. A ladybug? Kinda cute, but not me. Then it hit me: a red queen! Powerful, dramatic, and totally doable.
Next, I raided my closet. I already had a long, flowy red skirt – score! I also found a red velvet top that I hadn’t worn in ages. The base of the costume was coming together without spending any money. Nice!
The DIY Part
But a queen needs a crown, right? So, I grabbed some cardboard, red paint, and some glitter I had lying around. I cut out a crown shape – nothing fancy, just some pointy bits – and painted it red. Once it was dry, I slapped on a bunch of glue and dusted it with red glitter. Bling!
- Cardboard – check!
- Red paint – check!
- Glitter – double-check!
For extra flair, I found some red ribbon and fashioned it into a sash. I just draped it over my shoulder and tied it at the hip. Easy peasy.
Finishing Touches
Makeup time! I went for a bold red lip, of course, and some dramatic smoky eyes. I even added a few fake jewels around my eyes for extra queenly sparkle. I found the makeup at a local store.

Finally, I put it all together. The skirt, the top, the crown, the sash, the makeup – it actually looked pretty good! I felt like a real (budget-friendly) red queen. And the best part? I didn’t have to buy a whole new costume. It was all about repurposing and getting creative with what I already had, plus a little bit of DIY magic.
