So, this whole “trump dress” thing. It wasn’t exactly planned, you know? It just sort of… happened. I was scrolling online, late at night, as one does, and saw some wild costume ideas. And then, bam, the thought hit me: a Trump-themed dress. Not for any particular political reason, mind you, more like a social experiment, or maybe just because I like a weird challenge. “How hard could it be?” I thought. Famous last words, honestly.

Getting Started – The “Easy” Part

First off, I figured I needed a base. A simple dress pattern, nothing too fancy. I had this old pattern lying around, one of those A-line numbers. Easy peasy, I told myself. I even had some plain fabric, a sturdy cotton, that I thought would be perfect. The real kicker was going to be the “Trump” part. I didn’t want to just stick a picture on it. No, that would be too simple. I wanted it to be… integrated.

My first idea was to get fabric custom printed. I searched around, looked at a few sites. Some were pricey, others had really complicated requirements. And then, there was the whole issue of what image to even use. I spent days, I tell you, just days, looking for something that wasn’t too on-the-nose, or too, well, you know. It was a minefield. I almost gave up right there.

The Actual “Making Of” – Or, Where Things Got Messy

Eventually, I settled on a sort of pop-art collage idea. Less direct portrait, more iconic bits and pieces – you get the picture. I decided against custom fabric in the end. Too much hassle. Instead, I went down the iron-on transfer route. Loads of them. Different sizes, different little elements. My thinking was, I could arrange them myself, get a bit more creative.

So, I bought a mountain of transfer paper. And then the printing began. My printer, bless its ancient soul, decided this was the project it was going to stage a protest against. Streaks, paper jams, colors coming out all weird. It was a battle. I probably wasted half the pack of transfer paper just getting things to look halfway decent.

  • Cutting out the dress pieces from the plain fabric? That was fine.
  • Sewing the basic shape? No problem, done it a million times.
  • But then came the transfers. Oh boy.

Arranging them on the fabric was like a really stressful jigsaw puzzle. And ironing them on? You have to get the temperature just right, the pressure just right. Some stuck perfectly. Others peeled at the edges. Some even left a weird shiny residue. My craft room looked like a disaster zone. Scraps of paper, bits of failed transfers, the smell of hot plastic. Not glamorous, let me tell you.

The Grand Reveal… To Myself

After what felt like an eternity of printing, cutting, ironing, and a fair bit of muttering under my breath, it was… done. I held it up. And you know what? It was something, alright. Definitely a “trump dress.” It wasn’t a fashion masterpiece. It wasn’t going to win any design awards. It was a bit lopsided in places, some of the transfers were a tad crooked. But it was undeniably what I set out to make, in a very chaotic, roundabout way.

I haven’t actually worn it anywhere. Not sure I will. It’s hanging in the back of my closet now. Sometimes I look at it and just shake my head. It was a process, that’s for sure. One of those projects you do just to see if you can, and then you’re not quite sure why you did. But hey, it’s a story, right? And it kept me busy for a while. So, there’s that.
