Alright, so Tom Ford for men. It’s one of those names, isn’t it? You hear it, and you immediately picture something very specific. Sharp suits, serious money, maybe a movie star or two. For a long time, that’s pretty much all it was to me – a fancy label I’d see in magazines or online, worlds away from my everyday grind.
But then, life has a funny way of throwing these things in your face, doesn’t it? It wasn’t like I suddenly won the lottery and decided to kit myself out. Nah, my real brush with the whole Tom Ford menswear idea came about in a much more mundane, almost accidental way. It all ties back to this period a few years ago. I was in a job, you know, one of those corporate gigs where everyone’s trying to climb the ladder, or at least look like they are.
There was this big project, a real make-or-break thing for my department, and I got tapped to present our findings to some seriously senior people. The kind of people who probably had their shirts custom-made. My usual work attire was, let’s just say, functional. Tidy, but not exactly exuding “high-powered executive.” My boss, in his infinite wisdom, pulls me aside and says, “You gotta look the part for this one. Really sell it.” Subtle, he was not.
So, there I was, suddenly under pressure to upgrade my wardrobe, fast. I started looking around, and of course, Tom Ford’s name pops up as the gold standard. Out of some weird mix of curiosity and desperation, I actually went into one of their stores. Just to see. Man, it was like stepping onto a different planet. Everything was so sleek, so quiet. The clothes themselves? Beautiful, no doubt. I picked up a jacket, just to feel the fabric. It felt like it was worth more than my car at the time.
Then I saw the price tag. Wow. Let’s just say it would have been my grocery budget for a good few months. I remember thinking, “Is this what it takes? Do you really need a suit that costs this much to be taken seriously?” It felt absurd. I walked out of there pretty quick, feeling a bit deflated and, honestly, a bit silly for even thinking about it.

This idea that you need to project a certain image, spend a certain amount of money, to be valued or to succeed. For a while, especially when I was younger, I think I bought into that a little bit.
Now? I look back and just sort of chuckle. The clothes are still nice, I’m sure. If you’ve got the cash and it makes you happy, go for it. But that whole song and dance, the pressure, the idea that a label defines you or your success? I’m way past that. My practice now is more about finding what feels authentic, what’s practical, and what doesn’t give me a minor panic attack when I look at the price. Turns out, feeling comfortable in your own skin, and in your own, regular-priced clothes, is a pretty good look too.
