Okay, so I’ve been meaning to sort through my old clothes for ages, and today I finally tackled the beast – my 2014 wardrobe!
The Deep Dive
First, I dragged everything out of the closet and onto my bed. Holy moly, it was a mountain of fabric! I’d completely forgotten about some of these things.
I started by making three piles:
- Keep: Stuff I still love and wear.
- Donate: Gently used items that someone else could enjoy.
- Trash: Anything ripped, stained, or beyond repair.
It is very hard to classify the clothes at one time, and to make a quick decision about where they would go. So I took a way to classify them according to the different seasons.
Then the sorting began. I tried on everything. Some things were instant “keeps” – like my favorite band tee and that comfy sweater I practically lived in. Others were tougher. That dress I wore to that one party? Super cute, but realistically, I’m never going to wear it again. Donate pile it is!
There were a few “maybes” that I hung back in the closet, just in case. I figure I’ll revisit them in a few months and see if I actually miss them.
The Results
After a few hours of work, I managed to significantly downsize. My “keep” pile was smaller than I expected, which is good! The donate pile was HUGE, which also feels good. It’s nice to think these clothes will get a second life.
And the trash pile? Well, let’s just say there were a few items that should have been retired years ago. Oops!
My closet is so much more organized now, and I actually feel like I have more options, even though I got rid of so much. It’s amazing how decluttering can do that!
Finally,I think it’s a fulfilling day.
