Okay, so I’ve been seeing all these super cute hat hairstyles trending lately, and I had to try them out. I’m a total hat person, especially in the fall and winter, but sometimes it feels like my hair just gets squished and sad underneath. No more, I said! Time for a hat hair glow-up.

First, I gathered my supplies. This was pretty simple: my favorite hats (a beanie, a baseball cap, and a wider-brimmed felt hat), some bobby pins, a hair tie, and my trusty dry shampoo. I figured I’d start with the easiest looks and work my way up.

The Beanie Test

I started with the classic beanie. My usual problem is that my hair gets all flat and staticky. So, I flipped my head upside down and spritzed some dry shampoo at the roots. This gives it some texture and volume, even after being under a hat. Then, I just pulled the beanie on, making sure it wasn’t too tight. I left a few strands of hair out around my face to keep it from looking too severe.

  • Step 1: Dry shampoo for volume.
  • Step 2: Put beanie on loosely.
  • Step 3: Pull a few strands out.

Result? Pretty good! My hair still looked decent when I took the beanie off, not like a total pancake. Success!

Baseball Cap Adventures

Next up, the baseball cap. I usually just throw my hair in a ponytail, but it always feels kinda boring. I decided to try a low, messy bun instead. I gathered my hair at the nape of my neck, twisted it into a loose bun, and secured it with a hair tie. I made sure to pull out some pieces around my face and at the crown of my head to make it look a little more effortless.

Then, I placed the cap on.

It looked way better than my usual ponytail. A little more stylish, a little less “I just came from the gym.”

The Fancy Felt Hat

Finally, I tackled the felt hat. This one felt the trickiest, because it’s a bit more structured. I opted for a side braid. I parted my hair to the side, braided it loosely, and secured the end with a hair tie. I made sure the braid was low enough that it wouldn’t get in the way of the hat. I also gently pulled on the sections of the braid to make it a little wider and messier.

I carefully put the hat and made sure all the hair under the hat is behind my ear, to make sure the hat fit well on my head.

This was my favorite! It felt chic and put-together, but still relaxed. And again, no hat hair disasters when I took it off.

So, my hat hairstyle experiment was a definite win. I feel like I have a whole new set of options for fall and winter, and I won’t be afraid to rock my hats anymore. It really just takes a few extra minutes and a couple of simple tricks to keep your hair looking good, even under a hat!
