Custom EV Hummer Camper Overland: How to Choose the Right Vehicle for Living Off the Grid and Exploring

Okay, so, let me tell you about this crazy project I just wrapped up. I’ve always been into overlanding, you know, hitting the road less traveled, getting way out in the boonies. And I’ve been eyeing these new electric Hummers for a while. They’re beasts, right? Tons of power, look like they can go anywhere. So I thought, why not combine the two? An electric Hummer camper? Yeah, it sounded wild, even to me at first.

First things first, I got my hands on a 2022 GMC Hummer EV. This thing is an Edition 1 pickup, and it’s a monster. I picked it up, and I gotta say, just driving it off the lot felt like I was in a spaceship. It’s got this wild feature called “Watts to Freedom” – basically, it’s like a turbo boost. You hit it, and this thing just takes off.

Then came the hard part – the camper. I didn’t want some flimsy pop-up thing. I wanted a real, solid camper that could handle some serious off-roading. So, I found this company, EarthCruiser, out in Oregon. They build these hardcore campers, and I knew they were the ones to tackle this project. I gave them a call, explained my crazy idea, and to my surprise, they were into it!

Next up is the battery. This is a big boy, let me tell ya. The battery gives me enough juice to drive for what feels like forever. The sales guy told me it is about 300 miles, give or take, depending on how I drive, maybe more. I went for the bigger battery, 24-module thing. More range, right? I was thinking of all the remote places I could get to without needing a charge. It was going to be a long drive to Oregon, so this big battery is perfect for me!

  • Driving to Oregon: I took my new Hummer and drove it all the way to Bend, Oregon. It was a long drive, but the Hummer made it easy. That big battery really paid off.
  • Meeting the EarthCruiser Team: These guys were awesome. They showed me around their shop, and I saw some of the other crazy builds they were working on.
  • Design Discussions: We spent hours going over the design of the camper. I wanted it to be rugged but also comfortable. We went back and forth on different layouts, materials, the whole nine yards.
  • Waiting Game: This was the hardest part. Building a custom camper takes time. I went back home and waited, and waited, and waited some more. Getting updates and pictures from EarthCruiser every now and then.
  • It’s Ready!: Finally, I got the call. My Hummer camper was finished! I flew back to Oregon, and there it was. My dream rig.

The first time I saw the finished product…man, it was something else. The camper was mounted on the bed of the Hummer, and it looked seamless as if it was always meant to be there. It was tough, it was rugged, and it was ready for adventure. Inside it has two themes, and I chose the “Lunar Horizon” theme. White interior. Looks awesome.

I’ve taken it out on a few trips now, and it’s been amazing. It’s like having a little apartment on wheels, but this apartment can go anywhere. We’re talking mountains, deserts, you name it. And the best part? I’m doing it all with zero emissions. It’s a whole new way to experience the wilderness.

This whole project was a bit of a gamble, but it paid off big time. It’s not just a vehicle; it’s a statement. A statement that says you can be adventurous and eco-conscious at the same time. And, yeah, it turns a lot of heads, too. People are always coming up to me, asking about it, taking pictures. It’s pretty cool.

So, that’s my story. My custom EV Hummer camper overland build. It was a long journey, a lot of work, but totally worth it. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got some trails to hit.
