My Day Trip from Copenhagen to Malmo on a Budget
Alright folks, woke up this morning thinking “Let’s pop over to Sweden!” because honestly, why not? Heard Malmo’s cool and it’s basically next door to Copenhagen. Only problem? Didn’t wanna burn a hole in my wallet. Grabbed my phone, searched cheap Copenhagen to Malmo tickets, and wow, flights came up first – like €200! Nah, mate, that ain’t happening. Started digging deeper.
Checked train options online. Danish rail site seemed okay, but prices kept shifting. Saw something about the Oresund Bridge train. Everyone online seemed to swear by it. Thought, “Right, getting physical tickets!” Dragged myself to Copenhagen Central Station around mid-morning. Place was buzzing.
Found the ticket machines. Scrolled through menus. Saw the Oresundstag direct train to Malmo. Price was about 90 DKK, which is… maybe £10 or $13? That felt waaaay better than flights. Tapped “buy,” punched in my card. Card reader blinked. Machine whirred and spat out a flimsy paper ticket. Relieved! Got it sorted in under 5 minutes.
Went hunting for the platform. Signs everywhere pointing to “Malmo” or “Sweden.” Followed the crowd, saw a modern train sitting there with “Oresundstag” on it. Hopped on with just minutes to spare. Train was pretty packed, ngl. Grabbed a seat near the window.
And we were off! Train rumbled out of Copenhagen, glided through suburbs. Then BAM – we’re on that huge Oresund Bridge! Blue water everywhere for like 15 minutes straight. Snap-happy tourists clicking away. Totally awesome views. Crossed into Sweden so smooth, barely felt it. No passport check or anything. Whole train ride was maybe 35-40 minutes? Super quick.
Got out at Malmo Central feeling chuffed. Walked straight into town. Easy peasy. Spent the day wandering that weird twisty tower thing (Turning Torso) and chilling by the canal.
Few things I learned:
- Buy at the station or online direct – avoid flight searches for this trip.
- Walk-up train prices seem stable on the day, not like flights.
- Pack light, no faffing with airports.
- Bring DKK or SEK, though cards work mostly.
- Seriously, 40 minutes and you’re in another country. Wild.
Dashed back to Copenhagen before dinner with a ticket just as easy. Whole day trip for less than a pricey lunch back home. Job done!
