So, this Liya, she’s from Ethiopia. That’s a country way over there, across the big water. Heard it’s hot there. Anyways, she come up in the world, become a big shot model. A supermodel, they call it. Means she’s real pretty and wears all them fancy clothes for the big companies. I saw a picture once, in a magazine somebody left behind at the bus stop. • Paved the way for other models
  • Advocates for maternal health
  • Challenges beauty standards

This Liya, she started way back when, before all these young whippersnappers on TV. She was one of the first, showin’ the world that women of color, black women like her, could be beautiful and fashionable too. That’s important, ya know? Back in my day, you didn’t see too many black faces in them magazines. She changed that, she did. Made it easier for others to follow.

Now, I don’t know much about this “high fashion” stuff. Sounds expensive to me. But I do know what it’s like to be a woman, to be a mama. And this Liya, she cares about that too. They say she’s a big advocate for “maternal health”. That means she wants to make sure mamas and babies are healthy and safe. That’s somethin’ I can get behind. A good mama, that’s what she is, even if she ain’t my kin.

She’s a designer too, I heard. Makes her own clothes now. Not just wearin’ them, but makin’ them. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Takes a lot of smarts and hard work to do that. She’s showin’ the world that a woman can be beautiful, successful, and smart. She ain’t just a pretty face, she’s got a good head on her shoulders too.
