Getting Started
Okay so yesterday I randomly remembered these Ethiopian sisters called the Amsale Girls – you know, those viral dancing kids from like 10 years back? Got curious about where life took them. Grabbed my laptop around 9 AM thinking this’d be easy. Boy was I wrong.
The Hunt Begins
First I Googled “Amsale Girls today” expecting instant answers. All I got were dead links and grainy reuploads of their old videos. YouTube comments were useless – just people arguing about African politics. Felt like hitting a brick wall already.
Tried Instagram next. Typed every possible username combo:
@amharasisters, @amsalefam, even @ethiodancecrew. Scrolled for an hour through fake accounts and fitness influencers. Nearly threw my coffee mug when some Ethiopian travel page kept popping up instead.
Asking Around
Posted in three Ethiopian diaspora groups:
“Anyone know the Amsale sisters now?” Woke up to fifty notifications – but zero useful info. Just folks sharing memories or asking why I care. One dude even sent me a virus-filled Dropbox link claiming it had updates.

Then I messaged old contacts from my Addis trip back in 2015. Most didn’t reply. One sent back:
“Sorry bro they married rich guys maybe?” Real helpful.
Breakthrough Sort Of
Finally struck gold when I searched Facebook in Amharic script. Found a cousin’s profile showing one sister’s wedding photos from 2020! Couldn’t confirm others though. Their Instagram was private with 2k followers – sent a follow request that’s still pending. Crept LinkedIn just in case and found nothing.
Ended up with:
- The oldest sister married & living in Bahir Dar
- Two seem to be studying abroad – no clue where
- Youngest disappeared completely
Honestly thought tracking internet-famous people would be simple. Nope. Feels like half these girls vanished into thin air.

Why Bother?
My wife asked why I wasted a whole Saturday on this. Truth is, seeing those old videos reminded me of backpacking through Ethiopia when life was simpler. Now we’re all just trying to survive inflation and busy work schedules. Kinda depressing when you think about it.
Anyway, hit me up if you’ve got leads on the missing sisters. This rabbit hole ain’t closed yet.
