Okay, so I got really into this whole 1980s fashion thing lately, specifically 1987. Don’t ask me why, I just did! I wanted to see if I could pull off a look from that year, you know, for fun. So, I started by, well, looking things up.

First, I scoured the internet. I mean, I typed in “1987 fashion women” into a search engine and went down a rabbit hole of images. I looked for common stuff, things that popped up a lot.
My Research Phase
- Lots of shoulder pads. Big ones.
- Bright colors, like really bright. Think neon.
- High-waisted jeans, sometimes with acid wash.
- Big belts, often worn high on the waist.
- Oversized sweaters and sweatshirts.
- Leggings, sometimes stirrup pants.
- Big earrings, chunky necklaces.
- Perms,big hair.
I picked out a few outfits that looked kinda cool and, importantly, like something I could maybe recreate with stuff I could easily find. I avoided anything too crazy, like a full-on power suit with giant shoulder pads. I’m not that brave!
Putting the Look Together
Next, I hit the thrift stores. Seriously, this was the best part! I found a bright pink oversized sweater, a pair of high-waisted, light-wash jeans (they even had that slightly tapered leg!), and a wide black belt. Score!
I already owned some basic black leggings, so I was good there. Then, I raided my mom’s old jewelry box (with her permission, of course!). I found some amazing clip-on earrings – huge gold hoops – and a chunky gold chain necklace. Perfect!
The Final Touches
For my hair, I attempted to tease it. Let’s just say it didn’t quite reach the heights of 1987, but it was bigger than usual. I didn’t have any hairspray, surprisingly, so I used a little bit of gel to try and get some volume. Not ideal, but it worked okay.

Finally, I put it all on. Sweater, jeans, leggings, belt, earrings, necklace. I even found some old white sneakers that looked the part. And you know what? It actually looked pretty good! It was definitely…different from my usual style, but it was fun to wear something so bold and colorful.
I took a few pictures, just for myself, and showed them to my mom. She got a real kick out of it. She even remembered wearing a similar outfit back in the day! Overall, it was a fun little project. It wasn’t perfect, but I definitely felt like I captured a bit of that 1987 vibe.
