1989 Fashion: Relive the Style! (Then and Now Photos)

1989 Fashion: Relive the Style! (Then and Now Photos)

Okay, so I’ve been totally obsessed with 1989 fashion lately. I mean, the colors, the patterns, the everything! I decided I had to try and recreate some iconic looks. So, that’s exactly what I did, here’s my whole process, step by step.

Diving into Research (aka Pinterest Obsession)

First things first, I needed inspiration. I started by hitting up Pinterest. Seriously, I spent hours just scrolling through photos of 1989 fashion. I made a whole board dedicated to it – everything from everyday outfits to, like, full-on music video looks.

I also watched some old movies and music videos from that year. You know, to really get a feel for the vibe. It was awesome research, if I do say so myself.

Hitting the Thrift Stores

Next up, the real challenge: finding the actual clothes. I knew I wanted to do this as authentically as possible, so I decided to go thrifting. My local thrift stores are usually goldmines, but this was a whole different level.

  • I spent, like, an entire Saturday going from store to store.
  • I looked for key pieces: oversized sweaters, acid-wash jeans, anything with shoulder pads (obviously).
  • I searched bright neon colors, geometric patterns, and anything that screamed “late ’80s.”

The Struggle (and the Triumphs)

It wasn’t all smooth sailing. Finding stuff that actually fit and was in decent condition was tough. I found a few amazing sweaters, but they were, like, two sizes too big. I almost gave up a few times, I’m not gonna lie.

But then, I stumbled upon this perfect acid-wash denim jacket. It was slightly oversized, had that perfect worn-in look, and the fit was…well, it was close enough! That was a major win.

Putting It All Together

Once I had a few key pieces, I started experimenting.

  • I tried different combinations: high-waisted jeans with a tucked-in oversized sweater, the denim jacket with literally everything.
  • I added some chunky gold jewelry (also thrifted, of course) and some white sneakers.
  • I played the music, to imagine the full 1989 fashion style.

The Final Look(s)

Honestly, I was pretty stoked with how it all turned out. It wasn’t perfect, but it definitely captured that 1989 vibe I was going for. It was so much fun stepping back in time, even if it was just for a little while. I totally recommend trying this yourself if you’re into vintage fashion!
