Okay, so today I’m gonna share my experience messing around with imane ayissi’s designs. Honestly, it was a bit of a wild ride, but I learned a lot, so here we go.
First things first, I did some digging. I wanted to get a feel for Ayissi’s style. Looked at tons of his stuff online – runways, interviews, you name it. I noticed a real focus on clean lines, bold colors, and using traditional African textiles in a modern way. Pretty cool stuff.
Then, I decided to try recreating a simple top I saw in one of his collections. It was basically a boxy silhouette with some really interesting geometric patterns. I figured it would be a good starting point.
Here’s where the fun began. Finding the right fabric was a pain! Ayissi often uses wax prints and other African textiles that aren’t exactly easy to come by in my area. I ended up sourcing something online that was similar in weight and texture, but not quite the same pattern. Oh well, gotta work with what you got, right?
Next up: drafting the pattern. I’m no expert pattern maker, so I cheated a bit. I took a simple boxy top I already owned and used it as a template. Then, I modified it to match the dimensions of the Ayissi design I was trying to copy. I kinda winged it with the neckline – just eyeballed it until it looked right. Don’t judge me!
Cutting the fabric was stressful. I was so worried about messing up the pattern placement. I spent way too long arranging and rearranging the pieces before I finally took the plunge. Seriously, I was sweating bullets.
Sewing was actually the easiest part. Straight lines, simple seams. I just took my time and made sure everything was aligned properly. The only tricky bit was the neckline – I had to be careful to get a clean finish.
The big reveal? It wasn’t perfect, not even close. The fabric wasn’t quite right, the fit was a little off, and my pattern matching skills were definitely lacking. But hey, it was recognizable as an imane ayissi inspired piece. And more importantly, I learned a ton.
