Alright, so check it, today I’m gonna walk you through my little adventure with “plein.” I know, sounds kinda fancy, but trust me, the process was anything but.
It all started last week. I was messing around, trying to find a quick way to, you know, do some image stuff. I needed to batch process a whole bunch of photos – resizing, renaming, the usual grunt work. I was using some online tools but found the limit to upload, so I decided to learn the tool “plein” locally on my computer.
First things first: Installation.
- I headed over to their GitHub page, or wherever they host the darn thing.
- Followed the instructions. It was mostly just copy-pasting commands into my terminal.
- Had some issues with dependencies at first. Classic, right? Something about missing libraries. I just googled the error messages, installed whatever it told me to, and tried again. Third time’s the charm, it installed.
Then I tried the demo.
- I found some example commands to try out. Resizing an image was my first test.
- Fumbled around with the command-line arguments. I was getting the dimensions wrong, like telling it to resize to “50 percent” instead of “50%”. Rookie mistake, I know.
- After a bit of trial and error, the image finally resized! Small victory.
Now for the real deal: Batch processing.
This is where things got interesting. “plein” can handle multiple files at once. So I did:
- Created a folder with all the images I needed to process.
- Figured out the right command syntax to target all files in that folder. Wildcards are your friend.
- Ran the command. Watched the terminal window scroll as “plein” worked its magic.
Naming Convention is import, I renamed the files based on the date it was created.
Challenges? Oh yeah.
- Some files were giving errors. Turns out, some had weird metadata that “plein” didn’t like. I used another tool (ImageMagick, if you’re curious) to strip the metadata from those files.
- The resizing was taking longer than I expected. “plein” is fast, but not instant, especially with larger images.

In the end, I successfully processed all the images. Resized them, renamed them, and got them ready for whatever I needed them for.
Final Thoughts:
“plein” is pretty powerful once you get the hang of it. The command-line interface might scare some people off, but it’s worth learning. It’s way faster and more flexible than using online tools for batch image processing. Plus, you’re not uploading your precious photos to some random website. I’ll keep using it.
