Okay, let’s talk about 2006 fashion. Thinking back to that year… wow, it feels like a different world. I remember I was hustling, trying to get a handle on things, you know, life stuff. Work was whatever, but the look of things back then? That definitely stuck with me. It was a specific vibe, for sure.

So, what was everyone wearing?

Well, the biggest thing, I think, was the jeans. Everything was low-rise. Like, super low. You practically needed to pray they stayed up when you bent over. It was all about showing off the midriff. And yeah, that whole ‘whale tail’ thing? That was real. Seeing thong straps peeking out above jeans was actually a look people went for on purpose. Crazy times.

Layering was huge too. Remember this?

  • Wearing long tank tops, usually a plain color, under pretty much any other top. T-shirts, blouses, sometimes even another tank top. Don’t ask me why, it’s just what we did.
  • Tube tops had a moment. Always felt like a gamble, hoping they wouldn’t just slide down.
  • Denim jackets came back strong. Often paired with jeans. Yeah, the full denim-on-denim Canadian tuxedo thing happened.
  • And don’t forget the jean shorts, usually cut pretty short.

Oh, and tracksuits! Not the ones you’d actually exercise in. I’m talking about those velour ones, often in bright pink or baby blue. People wore those everywhere – shopping, just hanging out. Comfort was definitely creeping in, because yoga pants also started becoming normal pants to wear outside the house around then. And cargo pants! So many pockets.

I actually worked briefly in a shop selling clothes during part of that time. Man, the stuff we saw. Trying to fold those impossibly low jeans was a nightmare. And the sheer volume of cheap-looking jewelry and belts meant to sit on the hips… endless. We’d get boxes of cowl-neck tops, those drapey neck ones, and they’d fly off the shelves. It was intense seeing trends move that fast up close.

Looking back now, it’s kind of funny. Some of it seems really awkward, especially how low those jeans were. But that’s fashion, right? It goes in cycles. I see some echoes of it now, like the crop tops and even some baggier pants styles coming back. Maybe not exactly the same, but you can see the influence. It just goes to show, nothing ever totally vanishes, it just waits for its next turn.
