Digging Through the Past

Okay, so I got this idea, maybe more like a sudden urge, to find my old clothes from way back in 2008. Don’t ask me why, maybe just feeling a bit nostalgic, or maybe I was just clearing out the spare room. Yeah, probably the clearing out part started it.

First thing, had to figure out where that stuff even ended up. Remembered packing some boxes when I moved ages ago. Thought they might be up in the attic. So, pulled down the ladder, flashlight in hand, and went up there. Dusty as heck, man. Sneezed like ten times just getting the boxes down.

Found a couple of boxes labeled vaguely like “Old Clothes” or just “Stuff”. Dragged them downstairs into the living room. Felt kinda heavy. Had to wrestle one open, the tape was really stuck on there. And boom, there it was. A wave of… well, old fabric smell mostly.

What I Found

Pulled everything out. Spread it all over the floor. What a sight. It was like a time capsule.

  • Lots of band t-shirts, faded now. Some bands I don’t even listen to anymore.
  • Those really wide-leg jeans. Seriously, how did we walk in those?
  • A couple of those layered tops? Like a tank top sewn onto a t-shirt. Why?
  • Found that one hoodie I practically lived in. Still has a paint stain on the sleeve, remember doing that art project.
  • Oh, and belts. So many weird belts. Studded ones, brightly colored ones.

Some things were in okay shape, others… not so much. Moths got to one sweater, completely ruined. Some t-shirts looked kinda yellowed around the collar. Time does its thing, you know?

Sorting It All Out

Then came the hard part. What to do with it all? Couldn’t just stuff it back in the box. That defeats the purpose of clearing out, right? So, I made three piles. Keep, Donate, and Trash.

Tried on a few things for laughs. Those jeans? Couldn’t even button them up now, ha! The hoodie, though, the one with the paint stain, that went straight into the keep pile. Too many memories attached to that one. Most of the band shirts, too faded or just not my style anymore, went into the donate pile. Hoped someone else might get a kick out of them. The moth-eaten sweater and anything ripped or stained badly? Straight into the trash bag. No point donating rubbish.

Ended up with a small pile to keep, mostly just the hoodie and maybe one or two tees for sentimental reasons. A decent bag for donation. And a surprisingly large bag of stuff that was just too worn out.

End Result?

Felt pretty good afterwards. Got rid of some clutter. Took a little trip down memory lane. It’s funny looking back at what we wore, seems so strange now. But hey, it was the style then. Packed the keep stuff away properly this time, in a sealed container. Dropped the donation bag off later that day. The rest went out with the bins. Job done. Was an interesting afternoon, digging through 2008.
