Getting Started with Cardboard Creations
So, I had this pile of cardboard boxes stacking up. You know how it is with online shopping these days. Instead of just chucking them in the recycling, I got this weird idea – what if I tried making something wearable out of them? Like, actual clothing? Sounded a bit silly, but I figured, why not give it a shot?
First thing, I needed supplies. I went through my stash of boxes, picking out the ones that seemed cleaner and maybe a bit more flexible, though ‘flexible’ and ‘cardboard’ don’t really go together, do they? I grabbed my trusty box cutter, a big pair of scissors, and a whole lot of packing tape. Seriously, I thought I’d need a ton of tape, and I wasn’t wrong.
Cutting and Sticking
I didn’t really have a fancy plan. I just started cutting. I thought a simple vest shape would be easiest. So, I laid a big box flat and tried to sketch out a front piece and a back piece. Cutting the straight lines was okay with the box cutter, but trying to get armholes shaped right? That was tricky. The cardboard kept wanting to bend and tear where I didn’t want it to.
Once I had two vaguely vest-shaped pieces, the next step was joining them. I decided to tape the shoulder parts and the sides together. Lots of tape. I wrapped it around the edges to make them less scratchy, too. It started to look like… well, like two pieces of cardboard taped together. It wasn’t exactly haute couture, you know?
- Grabbed some big boxes.
- Found my cutter and scissors.
- Stocked up on packing tape.
- Tried cutting a basic vest shape.
- Taped the pieces together at shoulders and sides.
The ‘Wearable’ Part
Okay, time for the moment of truth. I tried slipping it on. Man, it was stiff! Moving my arms felt super restricted. It was noisy too, every little move made a crinkling, scraping sound. Comfort? Zero. Absolutely none. It was bulky and awkward. I couldn’t really bend at the waist properly either.
I looked in the mirror. It was pretty ridiculous, honestly. Just a boxy, brown shape hanging off my shoulders. It technically was clothing, I guess, in that it covered part of my body. But practical? Not a chance. I tried making a matching hat, just a simple cylinder taped together, which was easier but equally silly looking.

Final Thoughts
So, what did I learn? Well, cardboard isn’t exactly the fabric of the future. It was a fun afternoon project, though. Got me thinking creatively with materials I just had lying around. The final ‘outfit’ was definitely not something I’d wear out, maybe okay for a laugh at a costume party if you don’t plan on sitting down or moving much. It mostly just made me appreciate actual clothes a whole lot more! It was a good experiment, used up some boxes, and gave me a story to tell. Definitely wouldn’t call it a fashion breakthrough, but it was an interesting way to spend a day.
