So, those Diana and Dodi photos. You still see them pop up now and then, don’t you? Always felt a bit… much, the whole situation surrounding them. It wasn’t just the specific images themselves, it was the sheer volume of it all. They were absolutely everywhere. You felt like you couldn’t get away from it back then.

It reminds me, in a really roundabout way, of something quite different that happened in my own life. It probably sounds a bit daft to compare, but it’s about that underlying feeling of being completely swamped by something you can’t control.

I remember, it must have been sometime in the late nineties, I was trying to help my old man sort out a load of his paperwork. He’d been a bit under the weather, nothing too drastic, but enough that he wasn’t really up to keeping on top of all his bills and bits and bobs himself for a spell.

So, there I was, wading through statements, insurance policies, the usual kind of stuff. I needed to get in touch with this one company about a particular policy he had. Just a straightforward query, or so I thought. I picked up the phone and gave them a call. Seemed simple enough.

Well, let me tell you, that one phone call. It was like I’d personally stuck a giant “spam me” sign on our front door and broadcast our phone number to every telemarketer in a hundred-mile radius. Honestly, it was unreal.

Almost immediately, the phone started ringing off the hook. And it wasn’t just the company I’d originally called. Oh no. It was their ‘partners’, their ‘associates’, anyone and everyone who fancied a go. We were getting calls trying to sell us everything under the sun – things we had no interest in, things we didn’t need, and frankly, things we couldn’t have afforded even if we did. It was just relentless, day in, day out.

And the post! Don’t even get me started on the post. It was like an avalanche of junk mail, specifically targeted at my dad. Glossy brochures, letters that looked all official but were just dressed-up sales pitches, ‘exclusive offers’ for this, that, and the other. My dad, he started getting really muddled and stressed by it all. And I felt terrible, because it was my innocent little phone call that had kicked the whole thing off.

I must have spent weeks, and I really mean weeks, on the phone trying to get them to stop. Explaining the situation, telling them he was unwell, asking, then demanding, they take his details off their blasted lists. It was like banging your head against a brick wall most of the time. “We’ll make a note of that,” they’d say, all polite. And then, an hour later, the phone would ring again, or another heap of shiny junk would thud onto the doormat.

It made me properly furious, you know? That constant feeling of your peace being invaded, your privacy just gone, all because you tried to do one small, normal thing. And the sheer helplessness of trying to make it stop was the worst part.

And that, for me, is the feeling I always end up connecting to those Diana and Dodi photos. That overwhelming sense of a relentless, unstoppable barrage. Of course, what they actually went through was on an entirely different scale of awful, a global media frenzy, a level of intrusion that’s hard to even comprehend. There’s no real comparison in terms of the actual experience or the suffering involved, absolutely not.

But that core sensation, that feeling of being hounded, of every single move being watched, captured, and then blasted out for the whole world to see, whether you liked it or not… that’s the real gut punch for me when I stumble across those images these days. It’s almost not even about the individuals in the photographs anymore, as much as it is about what that whole circus represented.

So, yeah, that’s just a little ramble from me. It’s funny how your mind connects things sometimes, isn’t it? The massive public events and the small, private frustrations – sometimes they just seem to echo each other in unexpected ways.
