I stumbled upon this photographer guy, Mario Sorrenti, the other day. Heard he’s pretty big in the fashion world, so I figured I’d check out his stuff and see what the hype is all about.

First off, I did a bit of digging on the guy. Turns out he was born in 1971, and he’s Italian. He came from a family of artists and photographers and apparently taught himself how to use a camera. That’s pretty cool, I guess. I tried to look more information about him, and all of them are just some basic introduction, not so much useful information that I want to know.

Then I started browsing through his photos. A lot of them are from the ’90s, and yeah, I can see why he got famous back then. He’s got this knack for making his subjects look really… well, let’s just say he knows how to use lighting and angles to make people look good.

His Style

  • Glamorous: His photos definitely have that high-fashion vibe. Everyone looks like they just stepped out of a magazine, even if they’re just wearing a simple outfit.
  • Detailed: He pays attention to the little things, like the way fabric drapes or the way light hits someone’s face. It’s those details that make his photos stand out.
  • Simple: Even though they’re glamorous, his photos also have a kind of simplicity to them. It’s not all cluttered with crazy backgrounds or props. He lets the subject shine.
  • Black and White: I noticed he uses a lot of black and white, which I think adds to the classic, timeless feel of his work. He used to keep photographic diaries filled with black and white images.

I spent a good chunk of time just going through his portfolio. It’s interesting to see how his style has evolved over the years. He’s done work for all the big fashion magazines and brands, so there’s a lot to look at.

Honestly, I can see why people are into his work. He’s got a real talent for capturing beauty and making it look effortless. It’s not really my personal style, but I can appreciate the artistry of it.

After looking at his stuff, I felt inspired to try out some of his techniques in my own photography. I’m no professional, but I like to play around with my camera. I tried messing with different lighting setups and angles, trying to get that same kind of glamorous, yet simple, look that Sorrenti is known for.

It’s definitely harder than it looks! Getting the lighting just right is a real challenge, and I don’t think I have the same eye for composition that he does. But it was fun to experiment and try something new. Maybe one day I’ll get the hang of it, but for now, I’ll just stick to admiring Sorrenti’s work from afar.
