My Little Dive into Ron Fujikawa’s Stuff
Okay, so the other day, I kept bumping into the name Ron Fujikawa. Didn’t know much about him, honestly. Saw some pictures floating around, maybe product designs, stuff like that. Looked kinda neat, clean lines, you know? Got me curious.
So, I did what I usually do. I started digging around a bit. Just basic searching online, looking at images mainly. Wanted to get a feel for his style. It wasn’t like some big research project, just poking around during coffee breaks.
Found quite a few examples of things attributed to him. Some looked really simple, almost basic. But then you look closer, and you see the little details. How things fit together, the choice of materials maybe. It wasn’t flashy stuff, more… thoughtful, I guess?
I even tried sketching a little bit myself, inspired by one or two pieces I saw. Thought, “how hard can this be?” Well, harder than it looks to get that clean feel. My sketches ended up looking a bit clumsy. Made me appreciate the skill involved more.

- Then, I looked for common things. What shapes did he use often? What materials?
- Tried to replicate a simple form. Just pencil and paper.
- Realized the balance and proportions were tricky.
Didn’t end up building anything major or becoming an expert, obviously. But it was a good little exercise. Spent an afternoon looking, thinking, and trying to understand that design approach. It’s like peeling an onion sometimes, you see the simple outside, but there’s more layering underneath once you start looking.
Honestly, it just reminded me that good design, the kind that looks effortless, usually takes a ton of effort and thought behind the scenes. That was my main takeaway from just scratching the surface of Ron Fujikawa’s work. Made me look at some everyday objects around my own place a bit differently afterwards.
