Okay, so I decided I wanted to try and get that Princess Diana hairstyle look. You know the one, that iconic blonde feathered style she had. Seemed like a fun thing to attempt.
Getting Started
First thing, I knew styling my own hair like that was a no-go. Way too much effort and probably wouldn’t work anyway. So, wig hunting it was. I hopped online and started searching around. Typed in stuff like ’80s blonde wig’ and ‘princess diana hair wig’. Lots of options popped up, some looked really cheap and fake, others were super expensive.
I spent a bit of time just scrolling through pictures, trying to find one that looked like it had the right basic shape and color. Didn’t want anything too yellowy or too platinum, just that soft blonde she had. Found one that looked promising, wasn’t crazy expensive, so I just went for it and ordered it.
The Wig Arrives
Package came a few days later. I opened it up. Pulled the wig out of the net and bag it was in. First impression? Okay, it was definitely blonde. But it looked pretty flat, kinda squished from being in the package. The shape was roughly there, but it needed some serious help. It didn’t scream ‘Diana’ straight out of the bag, that’s for sure.
Trying it On & Styling
Alright, time to see what this thing looked like on an actual head. Grabbed a wig cap, tucked my own hair away, and popped the wig on. Fit was okay, adjustable straps inside helped. Looking in the mirror… yeah, it needed work. It was giving more ‘generic 80s’ than ‘royal icon’.
So, the styling began. I put the wig on a wig stand, which makes things way easier. Reference photos were key here. I had my phone open with pictures of Diana’s hair from different angles.
- First, I used my fingers to just shake it out and fluff it up, especially at the crown, trying to get some volume up there.
- Then I took a wide-tooth comb – gotta be gentle with synthetic wigs – and started trying to coax the hair into that feathered shape. Sweeping the bangs to the side, getting those sides to flip outwards and backwards.
- This took a while. Lots of gentle combing and finger-styling. I used a tiny bit of wig hairspray, just a light mist, to try and hold the shape, especially the volume on top and the feathered bits around the face. You really don’t want to soak it, just a little helps.
- I kept comparing it back to the photos. Adjusting a strand here, fluffing a section there. It was a bit fiddly, getting the layers to sit right. I thought about trimming some bits but decided against it – too scared I’d mess it up completely.
The Final Look
After a good amount of tweaking and spraying, it started looking much better. More like the actual style. I put it back on my head. Okay, yeah! That was much closer. The volume was better, the sides were doing that feathered flip thing. It wasn’t perfect, obviously, but you could definitely see the Princess Diana inspiration.
Took a few pictures for fun. It’s a really distinct look. Felt kind of strange but cool to wear it. It’s definitely a transformation.
Wrapping Up
So, getting the Diana look with a wig? Totally doable. But don’t expect to just pull it out of the bag and have it look right. You absolutely need to spend some time styling it. Be patient, use photos for reference, and go easy on the products. It was a fun little project, and the result was pretty good for an amateur job!
