Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this 1964 Chevy Chevelle project for a while now, and man, it’s been a journey. I thought I’d share my experience, ’cause who knows, maybe it’ll help someone else out there.

Getting Started

First things first, I had to find the car. I spent weeks scouring online listings, classifieds, you name it. Finally, I found one that seemed promising – a bit rough around the edges, but with good bones, or so I thought. I drove out to see it, checked it over as best as I could (I’m no mechanic, mind you), and made an offer. And boom, I was the proud owner of a ’64 Chevelle.

The Tear Down

Next up, the tear down. This is where things got real. I started by carefully removing the interior – seats, carpets, door panels, the whole shebang. It’s amazing how much dust and grime can accumulate over 50+ years! Then came the exterior trim, bumpers, lights, and eventually, the engine and transmission. I labeled everything, took tons of pictures, and tried to stay organized, which is not my strong suit, to be honest.

  • Took off exterior trim, bumpers, lights
  • Pulled out the engine and transmission
  • Labeled everything and took lots of pictures!

The Nitty-Gritty

With the car stripped down, I could really see what I was dealing with. There was rust, some dents, and a few surprises here and there. I spent a good chunk of time learning how to weld (thanks, YouTube!), and patching up rust holes. I also got my hands dirty with body filler, sanding, and priming, trying to get those classic lines back to their former glory.

Engine Work(If you did any)

Because there was no engine specifics, I had limited myself to other processes. If there was, I’d have added.

Putting It All Back Together

Once the bodywork was (mostly) done, it was time for the fun part – putting it all back together. This was like a giant jigsaw puzzle, only with greasy parts and the occasional curse word. I started with the suspension, then the engine and transmission, and slowly worked my way through the rest of the car. Seeing it slowly take shape was incredibly satisfying.

Finishing Touches

Finally, I got to the finishing touches – the paint job, the interior, and all the little details that make a classic car shine. This is where I really got to personalize the car and make it my own. I picked a color I loved, found some nice upholstery, and added a few custom touches here and there.

It’s been a long road, with plenty of ups and downs, but I’m finally at a point where I can step back and admire my work. This 1964 Chevy Chevelle is more than just a car to me – it’s a testament to patience, perseverance, and the joy of bringing something old back to life. It’s not perfect, but it’s mine, and I’m damn proud of it.
