Okay, so, the “elizabeth hurley black dress” thing. Where do I even start? It’s not like I’m Elizabeth Hurley, haha! But I got obsessed, totally obsessed, with that iconic Versace dress. You know the one? The safety pin dress?
First things first: Inspiration! I saw it in a magazine, then of course online, and I just KNEW I had to try and recreate something…inspired by it. Not a direct copy, mind you. More like a nod, a little wink to the original.
Next up: Research. I started digging around online for similar dress patterns. Didn’t want anything exact, just something with a similar silhouette. A simple slip dress seemed like the best starting point. Found a couple of free patterns online – nothing fancy. Then I started looking at fabrics.
Fabric Frenzy! I went to my local fabric store, which is basically my happy place. I wanted something black, obviously, but I also wanted something with a little bit of drape. I ended up choosing a lightweight jersey knit. It wasn’t the exact right fabric, but it was cheap and forgiving – perfect for experimenting.
The Sewing Begins (and the swearing!). I cut out the pattern pieces, which is always a little nerve-wracking. Then the sewing started. The jersey knit was a bit slippery, so it took a little patience. And let’s just say my seam ripper got a good workout! I ended up modifying the pattern quite a bit, making it a little more fitted through the waist and adding a slight slit.
Safety Pin Shenanigans. This was the fun part! I bought a bunch of oversized safety pins. I experimented with different placements, pinning them on the dress to see what looked good. I didn’t want to go overboard, just a few strategically placed pins to give it that “Hurley” vibe. I ended up using silver ones, for a bit of contrast.

Trial and Error (lots of error!). I tried on the dress about a million times. Tweaked the fit, adjusted the pins, and generally fussed over it until I was happy. It was far from perfect, but it was mine! I felt pretty damn good wearing it.
The Final Result: It wasn’t an exact replica, obviously. It was more of an “inspired by” piece. A little bit rock and roll, a little bit glamorous, and a whole lot of fun to make. I wore it out to a party and got a ton of compliments. More importantly, I felt confident and comfortable in it. And that’s what really matters, right?
Lessons Learned:
- Jersey knit is a pain to sew, but worth it for the drape.
- Safety pins are your friend.
- Don’t be afraid to experiment.
- Most importantly: Have fun!
So yeah, that’s my “elizabeth hurley black dress” story. A little bit DIY, a little bit fashion, and a whole lot of me trying to channel my inner goddess!
