Okay, so I’ve been seeing these “nik nik shirts” all over my feed, and honestly, I was curious. What’s the big deal? I decided to dive in and figure out how to actually make one of these things myself. It looked… crafty.

First, I gathered my materials. This was pretty basic:
- An old, plain t-shirt (I used a white one).
- Some fabric scraps (I had a bunch of colorful leftover pieces).
- Scissors. Good ones.
- Needle and thread (or a sewing machine, if you’re fancy, which I am sometimes).
- Pins. Lots of pins.
The Process
I started by laying the t-shirt flat on my table. It’s super important to get it nice and smooth, no wrinkles. Then, I took my fabric scraps and started cutting them into random shapes. Think triangles, wonky squares, even some weird blob shapes. The key here is random. No perfect lines!
Next, I arranged these fabric pieces all over the front of the shirt. I played around with the placement for a while, moving them around until I liked the look. It’s kinda like making a collage, but with fabric. I made sure to overlap some of the pieces, creating layers and different textures.
Once I was happy with the layout, I pinned everything down. Seriously, use a ton of pins. You don’t want these little pieces shifting around when you start sewing.
Now for the fun part – the sewing! I’m pretty decent with a needle and thread, so I just hand-stitched everything. I used a simple running stitch, going around the edges of each fabric piece. If you have a sewing machine, you could totally use that. A zig-zag stitch would probably look cool, too.

This part took a while. I put on some music and just went for it. It’s kind of therapeutic, actually. Just stitching and stitching.
After all the pieces were sewn on, I trimmed any loose threads and gave it a good once-over to make sure everything was secure. And that was it! My very own, very unique “nik nik” shirt.
Honestly, it turned out way better than I expected! It’s super colorful and has this cool, deconstructed vibe. I’m definitely going to be wearing this a lot. It was a fun, easy project, and a great way to use up some of those fabric scraps I had lying around.
