Okay, so today I wanted to talk about this little project I worked on, the ‘cow with flowers’ thing. It wasn’t some grand plan, really, just kind of happened.

Getting Started
It all began when I was just doodling one afternoon. Had this image in my head of a cow, but not just any cow, one looking kinda chill, maybe even a bit whimsical. I often find myself drawing animals, they just have character, you know? So, I grabbed my sketchbook and a pencil, nothing fancy.
I started sketching out the basic shape of the cow. Didn’t want it too realistic, more on the charming, slightly cartoonish side. Played around with the posture, trying to make it look relaxed. Spent a fair bit of time just getting the head tilt right. You know how sometimes the smallest detail changes the whole vibe? Yeah, that was it.
Adding the Flowers
Then I thought, it needs something extra. Just a cow felt a bit plain. Flowers popped into my head. Why not? A cow chilling in a field, maybe it got some flowers stuck in its fur, or maybe it’s wearing them like a little crown. I liked the crown idea better. Seemed funnier.
So, I started sketching simple flower shapes around its head, nestled behind the ears and on top. Daisies, maybe some forget-me-nots, nothing too complicated. Just little pops of potential color against the cow’s pattern.
Bringing it to Life

Once I was happy with the pencil sketch, I decided to make it a bit more permanent. I usually use digital tools for this part nowadays, easier to correct mistakes, haha. So, I scanned the sketch and opened it up in my drawing software. Nothing high-end, just what I’m used to.
- First, I laid down the basic line art over my sketch. Kept the lines fairly clean but not perfectly smooth, wanted to keep that hand-drawn feel.
- Then came the colors. Choosing the cow’s pattern took a minute. Went with the classic black and white spots, felt right. Made them nice and bold.
- For the flowers, I picked bright, cheerful colors. Yellow centers for the daisies, light blue petals, some pinks and purples thrown in for variety. Tried to make them contrast nicely with the cow.
- Added some basic shading. Didn’t go overboard, just enough to give it a little depth, make it feel less flat. Focused on where shadows would naturally fall, under the chin, beneath the flower crown.
The Finishing Touches
I looked at it for a while. Felt pretty good. Added a little blush to the cow’s cheeks, just a tiny detail but I think it added to the cuteness. Made sure the background was simple, didn’t want anything distracting from the main subject. A plain light color worked best.
And that was pretty much it. Saved the file. It wasn’t a massive undertaking, more of a pleasant afternoon’s work. Just enjoyed the process of taking a simple idea and bringing it to life, step by step. Seeing that slightly goofy cow with its flower crown staring back from the screen felt like a small win. It’s these little creative sessions that keep things interesting, right?
