Okay, so I saw this “garbage bag dress” trend and I was like, “No way, that’s ridiculous.” But then, boredom hit, and I figured, why not? I mean, worst case scenario, I have a funny story, right?

First, I grabbed a big, black garbage bag – the heavy-duty kind, because I didn’t want any embarrassing rips. I also found some scissors and tape. That’s it. My supplies were super basic.
The “Design” Process (LOL)
- I stepped into the bag, pulling it up like I would with pants. This was already hilarious, and I definitely took a selfie.
- Then, I cut a hole for my head at the closed end of the bag. I eyeballed it, which was probably a mistake, because it ended up a little… crooked.
- Next, I made armholes. I just snipped slits on either side. Again, very scientific, very precise. (Not really.)
- I used the tape to kind of… cinch the waist? I wanted it to have some shape, you know, not just be a straight-up bag. I stuck some tape on the sides and pulled it tight. The tape did not want to stick so I had to try multiple times before giving up!
Honestly, it looked… surprisingly okay? I mean, it was still clearly a garbage bag, but it was a garbage bag with style. I even tried adding a “belt” with some leftover ribbon I had lying around. It helped a little, I guess.
I paraded around my apartment, feeling like a total goofball, but also kind of impressed with my resourcefulness. I sent pictures to my friends, and they were dying laughing. Mission accomplished, I’d say!
Would I wear it out in public? Absolutely not. But for a silly afternoon project, it was totally worth it. Plus, now I can say I’ve officially made a dress out of a garbage bag. Who else can say that?!
