Okay, so I’ve been wanting to make a halter neck knee-length dress for a while now, and I finally got around to it! I started by picking out the fabric. I went with a really pretty, flowy cotton that I thought would be perfect for summer.

Next, I found a pattern online. It wasn’t exactly what I was looking for, but it was close enough, and I figured I could make some adjustments.
Then came the measuring. I took my bust, waist, and hip measurements and compared them to the pattern’s size chart. I ended up having to blend between a couple of sizes to get the right fit. After that, I carefully cut out all the pattern pieces from my fabric. This part always takes me the longest because I’m so scared of messing up!
Once everything was cut out, I started sewing. First, I sewed the darts on the front and back pieces. Then, I attached the front and back pieces together at the side seams.
The halter neck part was a bit tricky. I had to figure out the right length for the straps so that the dress would fit comfortably and look good. After a bit of trial and error, I finally got it right. I sewed the straps to the front of the dress and then created a casing for them at the back so I could tie them.
Next, I hemmed the bottom of the dress. I decided to do a simple rolled hem to keep the look clean and simple.

- Measure bust, waist, and hips
- Cut out fabric pieces
- Sew darts
- Attach front and back at side seams
- Figure out strap length
- Sew straps to front
- Create casing for straps at back
- Hem the bottom
Finally, I tried on the dress, and it fit perfectly! I’m so happy with how it turned out. It’s exactly what I envisioned, and I can’t wait to wear it out.
This whole dress-making process was a bit of a learning curve, but I’m so glad I did it. It’s so satisfying to create something with your own two hands!
Feeling
The feeling of wearing something you made yourself is just unbeatable. I felt a real sense of accomplishment and I cannot wait to take on another project!
