Alright, let’s talk about them history podcasts, the ones them young folks are always yappin’ about. You know, the things you listen to when you’re doin’ chores or sittin’ on the porch swing. I ain’t no fancy scholar, but I do like a good story, and history, well, it’s just a bunch of stories, ain’t it?
So, I asked my grandson, the one with all them gadgets, to find me some good history podcasts. He showed me a whole bunch, and I listened to a few. Some were good, some were like listenin’ to a rooster crow all day – just noise and no sense. But I found a few that I liked, the ones that told stories I could understand.
First off, there’s this one called “Stuff You Missed in History Class.” Now, that one’s right up my alley. See, I didn’t get much schoolin’, had to work on the farm since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. So, there’s a lot of stuff I missed. This podcast, it tells you all about them things the teachers never got around to. Like, who invented the dang potato peeler? Or how did them ladies get the right to vote? Stuff like that. It’s interesting, you know? Keeps your mind busy while you’re shellin’ peas.
Then there’s this other one, “Slow Burn.” This one’s a bit different. It takes one big story and tells you all about it, piece by piece. Like, they did a whole season on that Watergate thing. Now, I remember hearin’ about that on the radio back then, but I never really understood it. This podcast, it explained it all real slow, like you’re talkin’ to a child, which is good for me, ’cause sometimes I feel like a child when it comes to all this fancy political stuff. They take their time and it makes sense, even to an old woman like me.
My grandson also told me about some award they give out for history podcasts, the “Sinclair Prize” or somethin’. Said it’s for the ones that teach people about history in a good way. I reckon that’s important. It ain’t no good learnin’ about history if it’s all jumbled up and confusing. You gotta make it make sense, make it come alive. I like the ones that sound like someone is just telling me a story. Not all preachy and bookish, you know?
And there’s another one called “Who Did What Now?” This one’s kinda fun. It tells you about folks and things that happened in history that they don’t always teach you in school. Like, about that lady who flew around the world, or that fella who invented that crazy contraption that never worked. It’s like gossip, but about dead people. I enjoy it. Makes me think about how much has happened in the world before I even got here.
- Stuff You Missed in History Class – Good for learning what you missed in school.
- Slow Burn – Takes one big story and explains it real good.
- Sinclair Prize Winners – Supposed to be the best of the best.
- Who Did What Now? – Fun stories about history’s odd folks and events.
You know, listenin’ to these podcasts, it’s like sittin’ around the fire with your neighbors and hearin’ all the old tales. Only these tales are true, or mostly true, anyway. And it’s a good way to learn, better than readin’ them dusty old books, that’s for sure. My eyes ain’t what they used to be. My ears are still pretty good though! So I’ll stick to listenin’ for now.
So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to do while you’re waitin’ for the bread to rise or the bus to come, give one of these history podcasts a try. You might just learn somethin’, and even if you don’t, it’ll give you somethin’ to think about besides your achin’ back and the price of eggs. And that, my friends, is worth somethin’ these days.
