Okay so last week I kept seeing Kali Uchis everywhere on my feed – concerts, red carpets, just walking around looking crazy stylish. Her outfits always got that retro-sexy vibe I’m obsessed with. Thought to myself: “Man I gotta steal some of these looks”. So I spent two whole days digging through pics and trying to recreate her style with stuff I already own or could find cheap. Here’s how it went down.
The Hunting & Planning Phase
First thing I did was scroll Instagram saving every Kali outfit post I could find. Noticed she repeats these patterns:
- Super short denim skirts or tiny shorts with fishnets underneath
- Micro crop tops showing midriff
- Platform heels or chunky sneakers
- Big hoops and layered necklaces
Raid-ed my closet immediately. Found an old denim mini skirt from college – bit tight but hey, Kali would approve. Zero crop tops though. Total fail there.
Thrifting Disaster Turned Win
Hit three thrift stores downtown for crop tops. First two were garbage – either stained or looked like grandma curtains. Almost gave up until I found this bright pink spandex top at Goodwill for like $4. Snatched it so fast the hanger flew off. Also copped some cheap silver hoops from a street vendor.
The Re-Creation Mess
Tried putting together her Coachella look: denim skirt + fishnets + neon crop top. Looked in the mirror… yikes. My belly looked like uncooked pizza dough hanging out. Changed strategy – wore the skirt with an oversized band tee knotted at the waist instead. Added fishnets and my chunky Nike’s. Instant improvement.
Second attempt was her “telepatía” music video look: silky slip dress. Don’t own one, so I used my satin pajama top tucked into black leggings. Threw on every gold necklace I owned – five chains, two pendants, looked like a confused rapper. Ended up removing half of them. Key lesson: more isn’t always better.
Final Results & Reality Check
Wore my “Kali Lite” outfit to coffee with friends – denim skirt, black fishnets, thrifted pink top, and one statement necklace. Got two compliments! Also got weird stares from some moms at the cafe. Worth it. Here’s what stuck with me:
- Fishnets make everything edgier
- Thrift stores are goldmines for cheap statement pieces
- You don’t need designer stuff to copy her vibe
Still can’t pull off those itsy-bitsy tops though. Maybe next summer after a hundred crunches. Or just stick with the knotted tees.
