Felt real hyped after seeing all those Victoria Beckham runway pictures earlier this week. Kept thinking about those strong shoulders and sharp suits. Figured, why not try mixing some of those Fall 2024 ideas into my own stuff? Grabbed what I had and just went for it.

The Shoulder Obsession
First thing I zeroed in on? Those huge shoulders VB showed. Hunted through my closet like a madwoman. Found this super old navy blazer – super boxy, kinda stiff. Perfect. It was tucked way in the back, forgotten. Yanked it out. Honestly, the shoulder pads were a tiny bit sad, kinda deflated. So, I grabbed some spare padding I saved from an ancient 80s dress (thanks, mom!). Spent forever sewing little bits extra into the shoulders. Poked myself maybe five times? Worth it. The blazer sat different after that – strong, like the runway looks. Felt like wearing armor.
Playing with Suiting & Shine
VB loves a suit, right? Didn’t have a full matching power set. Scrounged around: found some dark grey cigarette trousers (from like, three jobs ago?) and paired them with a black, slightly shiny blazer. Not perfect twins, but close enough cousins. Looked sharp together. Made me feel pulled together instantly.
Then remembered all that shimmery stuff on the runway. Found this ridiculously thin silvery cami shoved in a drawer. Tried it under the blazer. First try: way too much. Felt like a disco ball escaped. Dialed it back. Unbuttoned the blazer just a bit so the cami peeked through a slit at the sternum. That worked. Subtle flash, not full-on glitter.
The Color Splash & Lengths
Those deep, rich colors VB used kept popping into my head. Didn’t have a runway-worthy emerald coat, obviously. But I did have this super bright teal turtleneck sweater I usually only wear skiing. Pulled it on under the grey trousers and black blazer combo. Left the blazer open. That pop of color against the dark suit pieces? Chef’s kiss. Didn’t feel bulky at all.
And the skirts! Like that leather skirt thing. Didn’t own one. Thought maybe a slip skirt could work? Found this long, dark grey one. Way too flowy. Needed structure. Belted it high up, over the turtleneck, right under my bust. Cinched it tight. The skirt fell straighter after that, hitting mid-calf. Different look, but the proportion felt right. More polished than before.

The Verdict
Walked around my apartment in the whole get-up – padded blazer, silky cami peeking, bright sweater, cinched skirt, pointy black boots. Stood different. Straighter. More confident. Definitely not runway-perfect, but it captured the feeling: powerful shoulders, sharp tailoring, a little shine, rich color, strong silhouettes.
- Lessons Learned:
- Padding old jackets? Surprisingly easy fix for major impact.
- Mix-and-match suits work if the colors vibe right.
- Shine needs careful restraint – tiny glimpses win.
- A bold pop of color instantly lifts tailored black/grey.
- Belting flowy stuff hard = instant faux structure.
Didn’t need to buy a thing. Just dug deep, messed around, and felt like VB’s spirit was living in my basic stuff for a day.
