So, there I was, staring into my closet again. Darts night was coming up, and I just felt… blah. Everything I owned felt wrong. You know how it is. You want something comfy, something you can move in, but not, like, actual gym clothes. And definitely not something boring. I swear, sometimes I think I should just wear a potato sack and call it a day.

The Spark of an Idea (or maybe just desperation)

I was fiddling with some old fabric scraps, leftovers from a disastrous attempt to make cushion covers a few years back. Don’t even ask. My sewing skills are, let’s say, enthusiastic but rarely accurate. Anyway, this one piece of dark blue cotton, sturdy stuff, caught my eye. And then it hit me – why not make something specific for darts? A ‘darts dress’!

Now, I’m not talking about some high-fashion runway thing. Just something practical, a bit fun. I started thinking, what would I want?

  • Pockets: Definitely needed pockets. For my darts, obviously. And maybe my phone, or a lucky charm.
  • Comfort: Had to be able to throw without feeling like I was in a straitjacket.
  • A bit of flair: Nothing too crazy, but maybe a little nod to the game.

My brain just latched onto it. You know how sometimes an idea gets in your head and won’t leave? It was like that. Forget common sense, forget my track record with needle and thread. I was going to do this. My partner just raised an eyebrow when I told them. They’ve seen my ‘projects’ before. Remember that ‘easy’ bookshelf I tried to build? Still wobbly.

Getting Down to Business (and a Few Stumbles)

First, I actually tried to sketch it. Big mistake. My drawing looked like something a toddler would make if you asked them to draw a ghost wearing a tent. Seriously, I should have just skipped that part. It only made me feel less confident.

So, I grabbed that blue fabric. I figured, I’d go for a simple A-line shape. How hard could that be, right? Famous last words. I laid it out on the floor, found an old t-shirt dress that kinda fit okay, and used that as a super rough guide. Measuring tapes and I have a complicated relationship. We mostly ignore each other.

Cutting it out wasn’t too bad. Fabric scissors are pretty forgiving. Then came the sewing machine. Oh, that machine. It’s an old beast, inherited from my aunt. Sometimes it purrs like a kitten, other times it sounds like it’s chewing rocks. This time? Rocks. Definitely rocks. The thread kept snapping, the needle got stuck. I spent a good hour just trying to get a straight seam on a scrap piece. Frustration was setting in. I almost packed it all up and ordered a pizza. That’s my usual go-to solution for project failures.

But I remembered why I started. I wanted this dress. So, I took a break, made a cup of tea, and had a stern chat with the sewing machine. Maybe it listened. Or maybe the tea just calmed me down. Who knows?

I managed to get the main body pieces sewn together. It was… dress-shaped. Ish. One shoulder looked a bit higher than the other, but I told myself it was ‘character’. Yeah, character.

Adding the ‘Darts’ to the Darts Dress

Then for the fun part – the ‘darts’ elements. I’d thought about trying to embroider a tiny dartboard, but my embroidery skills are even worse than my drawing. So, I went simpler. I found some red and white embroidery floss. I decided to add a few small, stylized dart flights near the neckline, almost like little arrows. And for the pockets – because of course, I added pockets – I stitched a very simple triple-20 (just three little lines) on one of them. Subtle, you know?

The pockets were an adventure in themselves. I’ve added patch pockets before, but getting them straight, and the same size? Let’s just say there was a lot of pinning, unpinning, and muttering under my breath. My cat watched the whole process with what I can only describe as judgmental curiosity. He probably could have done a better job.

The whole thing took me way longer than I expected. What I thought would be a couple of evenings turned into the best part of a week. There were moments I just wanted to bin it. Like that time I sewed one of the sleeves on inside out. And then did it again. Twice. Don’t ask me how. I think my brain just checks out sometimes when I’m concentrating too hard on not messing up.

The Grand Unveiling (Sort Of)

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of wrestling with fabric and thread, it was done. I held it up. It wasn’t perfect. Far from it. The hem was probably a bit wobbly if you looked too close. But it was a dress. A darts dress. Made by me.

I tried it on. It fit! It was comfortable! The pockets were deep enough for my darts! Success! (Mostly).

So, I wore it to darts night. I was a bit nervous, not gonna lie. It’s one thing to make something, another to actually wear it in public. I got a few looks. Then a few questions. My mate Dave actually said, “Did you make that? It’s… surprisingly decent!” High praise from Dave, trust me.

And you know what? I actually played pretty well that night. Maybe it was the dress. Maybe it was just a good night. Who cares? I felt good. It was comfy, it was unique, and it was mine. All those hours of frustration, the snapped threads, the wonky seams – suddenly felt worth it. It’s not going to win any design awards, that’s for sure. But it’s a reminder that sometimes, just making something, even if it’s a bit rough around the edges, is pretty darn satisfying.
