It all began with this perfectly innocent, plain grey GAP hoodie I had. Comfy, sure, but boring. I got this bright idea, you know? Make it unique. Something nobody else would have. I was scrolling online, saw all these cool customized things, and thought, ‘Hey, I can do that!’ Famous last words, right?
So, I went out and bought some stuff. Got these supposedly ‘easy’ iron-on patches – some retro band logos, a weird looking cat, you know, edgy stuff. And I figured, why stop there? I’ll add some cool, chunky stitching around the pocket and hood. I even dug out my mom’s old sewing machine from the attic. Big mistake. Huge.
First, the patches. The instructions said ‘iron on for 30 seconds’. I did that. One corner peeled up. So I ironed it again. And again. I swear I spent an hour just pressing down with that hot iron, fumes everywhere. Some bits stuck, others looked like they were barely hanging on for dear life. The ‘weird looking cat’ patch ended up looking even weirder, sort of melted on one side.
Then came the sewing machine. Oh, that cursed machine. I spent ages trying to thread the damn thing. Watched a dozen videos. Finally got it, or so I thought. The moment I touched the pedal, the needle just chomped down, made a horrible noise, and the thread snapped. Tried again. Needle broke. Replaced the needle. Thread tangled up underneath, making this giant bird’s nest of thread. It was a disaster. My dream of ‘chunky cool stitching’ turned into ‘jagged angry scars’ on the fabric.
I didn’t give up, though. Not yet. Stubborn, I am. I thought, ‘Okay, machine hates me, I’ll do it by hand!’ Grabbed a thick needle and some embroidery floss. My hand stitching? Let’s just say it wouldn’t win any awards. It was uneven, pulled the fabric weirdly, and looked like a child had attacked it with a crayon, but in thread form. The hoodie started to look…deranged. That’s the only word for it.
Here’s what went wrong, basically a list of my failures:

They’re done by people with actual skills, or at least a sewing machine that isn’t possessed. Me? I’ll stick to buying my hoodies pre-decorated from now on. Or maybe just plain. Plain is safe. Plain doesn’t lead to hours of frustration and a ‘mad’ piece of clothing mocking you from the closet.
