Getting Started with Ama’s Pink Stool
So, I’d been looking at this old wooden stool Ama keeps by her favorite window. She uses it all the time, puts her knitting basket on it, sometimes rests her feet. But man, it was looking really worn out. Scratched up, faded… just kind of sad. And I remembered she mentioned liking pink things lately. So, the idea hit me: give the stool a refresh. Make it ‘Ama’s Pink’ stool.

Prepping the Old Thing
First step was getting it ready. Hauled it out to the garage, away from everything else. It needed a good cleaning first. Wiped off years of dust and who-knows-what. Then came the part I don’t love: sanding. Had to get rid of the flaky old varnish and rough spots. Took a bit of elbow grease, sanding it down until it felt reasonably smooth. Didn’t aim for perfection, just wanted a surface the new paint could grab onto.
Gathering the Goods
Next, a trip to the local hardware store was in order. Needed a few things:
- Some wood primer (because the original wood was quite dark).
- The pink paint! This took some time. Stood there looking at swatches forever. Didn’t want anything too loud. Found a nice, soft rosy pink in the end. Felt right for Ama.
- Brushes, obviously.
- More sandpaper, finer grit this time.
- Old newspapers to protect the garage floor. Standard stuff.
The Painting Bit
Alright, back in the garage, spread out the newspapers everywhere. Started with the primer. Just one solid coat to seal the wood and give the pink a nice base. Let that dry properly for several hours. Patience is key here, I learned that the hard way on other projects.
Then, finally, time for the main event: the pink paint. Poured some out, started brushing. The first coat always looks a bit patchy, doesn’t it? That’s normal. Let it dry completely. Once dry, I gave it a very light sanding, super gentle, just to knock down any tiny bumps. Wiped off the dust. Then applied the second coat of pink. Ah, much better. Looked smooth and the colour was really solid now. Looked properly pink!
Finishing Up
I considered adding some details, maybe stencils or something, but decided to keep it simple. Just the nice, clean pink colour. The main thing now was letting it cure properly. Left it alone in the garage for a good couple of days. Didn’t want to risk smudging or chipping it right after finishing.

Dragged the finished stool back inside once I was sure it was totally dry. Have to say, it looks a world better. Brightens up her little corner by the window. It’s just a simple painted stool, nothing fancy, but feels good to have done it. Hope Ama likes her refreshed ‘pink’ stool when she sees it. A small job, but satisfying.
