Okay, so I’ve been obsessed with John Galliano’s time at Dior lately. I mean, the man is a genius, even if he’s a bit… controversial. I decided to really dive deep and try to recreate some of that iconic, theatrical, and slightly unhinged runway magic. Let me tell you, it was a journey.

Getting Started

First, I spent hours just looking at old Dior shows. I mean hours. I scrolled through grainy YouTube videos, low-res photos, everything I could find. I wanted to absorb the feeling of it all. The drama, the colors, the textures… it was all so over the top, but in the best way possible.

Gathering the Materials

Then came the hard part. You try finding ostrich feathers and yards of silk taffeta at your local craft store! No way. I ended up ordering a bunch of stuff online, and let’s just say my credit card took a beating.

  • I got some crazy fabrics – silks, velvets, even some weird plastic-y stuff that I thought looked cool.
  • I snagged a ton of beads, sequins, and rhinestones. Gotta have that bling!
  • Feathers! So many feathers. I think I bought out an entire online store.
  • And, of course, some basic sewing supplies. Because, you know, I actually had to make something.

The Messy Middle

And, after my room that looked like a fabric bomb.

The actual construction process was… chaotic.

I started by draping fabric on my mannequin, just trying to get a feel for the shapes and silhouettes. I pinned things, unpinned things, re-pinned things. There was a lot of trial and error. And a lot of swearing.

I attempted to sew some incredibly complicated seams. Let’s just say my sewing machine and I had a few arguments. I broke a few needles. I messed up a few times (okay, a lot of times). But I kept going.

The (Almost) Finished Product

I didn’t actually finish a complete “look.” I mean, Galliano’s designs are insane! But I did manage to create a few pieces that I’m pretty proud of. A ridiculously oversized hat covered in feathers. A skirt with so many layers it could probably stand up on its own. A bodice that’s basically just a pile of strategically placed beads.

It’s not perfect, but it captures some of that wild, theatrical energy that I was going for. It was a lot of work, and a lot of mess, but it was also a ton of fun. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go vacuum up about a million feathers.
