Okay, here’s my blog post about recreating the Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2013 look:

Alright, so I got totally sucked into this Diane Von Furstenberg Spring 2013 collection. I saw some pictures online, and I was like, “I gotta try to make something like that!” It looked so cool and wearable, you know?

My DIY DVF-Inspired Project

First, I scoured the internet for as many photos as I could find. I needed to see every angle, every detail. The runway shots were helpful, but I also looked for any behind-the-scenes stuff to see how the clothes actually moved.

Then, I started sketching. I’m no pro designer, my drawings are pretty rough, but it helped me figure out what I wanted to make. I decided to focus on one particular dress – a flowy, printed maxi dress. It had this cool color-blocking thing going on, and I thought I could maybe pull it off.

Next up: fabric shopping! This was the fun part. I hit my local fabric store, looking for something with a similar drape and feel. I found this gorgeous silk-like polyester that had a really nice flow. The print wasn’t exactly the same, obviously, but I found one with similar colors that I thought would work.

  • I got the base color.
  • Then found the contrast colors for bottom.

Then the real work began. I dusted off my old sewing machine. I am absolutely not a sewing expert.

I took a basic sewing class ages ago, but that’s about it. So, I knew this was going to be a challenge.

I started by making a super basic pattern.I have my old dress. I just traced that dress onto some paper. It wasn’t perfect, but it gave me a starting point. Then, I cut out the fabric, making sure to leave plenty of extra room just in case I messed up (which I totally did, multiple times!).

The color-blocking part was tricky. I had to sew these different colored panels together, and getting the lines straight was a nightmare. I ripped out so many seams! But I kept at it, and eventually, it started to look like something resembling a dress.

The final touches were the straps and the hem. I wanted to keep it simple, so I just did thin straps. And for the hem, I just did a basic rolled hem. Nothing fancy.

Honestly, it’s not a perfect replica. The fit isn’t quite right, and my seams are definitely not professional-looking. But, you know what? I made it! And I’m actually pretty proud of it. It’s comfortable, it’s got that same breezy vibe, and it reminds me of that awesome DVF collection. I wore it out to brunch the other day, and I felt pretty darn good!

So, that’s my little DIY fashion adventure. It was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. Maybe I’ll try another designer-inspired project soon. Who knows!
